Just started playing this week, but I have played a lot of civ II and call to power II. It is realy hard compared to the others I started out on the hardest level and got smashed by barbarians. It is nice that you can not just start a war and walk around and take one city afther another with the same army without getting attaked by more than one or two units in your home citys. Is it not a good idear to start a war in the beginning of the game?
I always end up getting my infrastrukter busted and only concoure 1 or 2 cityes ?
Dose anyone play on the hardest level (forgot the name of the level) aginst the computer?
Does war get easyer lather on in the game with new units?

In my opinion, starting a war at the begining on easy levels is a good idea. But, starting a war early on a hard level is disasterous. The AI way out produces you and will be all up in your face before you know it. On hard levels(emperor), I wait until I have the upper hand and take specific cities/areas that I want. Only good time to start an early war(that I can think of) on difficult levels is if you have a choke point that you can defend(think central america). This is great for great leader farming, which can majorly give you an advantage. To answer another question of yours, war does get easier at the end. AI struggles with large amounts of troops and also naval assaults. Its just not a good major war planner. Hope this was helpful.

I have played the hardest level of civ3 original (deity) there, i would usually start wars when i have a bunch of swordsmen (upgraded from warriors). occasionally if needed for a resource (read iron) i would go to war with archers. At that moment, i always played on pangea maps. Early war was part of my strategy to beat deity and it worked well.

Now in c3c, i am playing the hardest difficulty (sid) but things have changed for me. Since i am from holland, i decided to go with the dutch. To complement my civ, i chose an archipelago map. The AI's grow so fast and have units so cheap now, i think i will have to be very carefull with war, and domination is no longer the only type of victory to persue for me.

I also played civ2 before i started civ3, and also started playing civ3 on deity immeadiately. I really think if you want to ever beat it on deity, you should just start on deity, i see many people who try to "advance" to a higher level, i think that is not the way.
Just play deity and get your ass kicked until you win it. (took me about 6 games) civ3 deity is a multitude more difficult than civ2 deity. c3c Sid seems again a multitude worse. The advantages for tha AI are MUCH bigger and the human player has lost its tricks like city ring placement.

When i played civ3 on deity, i usually set barbarians on a lower level, but not completely turned them off. Now in c3c Sid, i turned them of completely.

It really depends on what you mean by "easier". Late wars are more boring because all you do is fire 200+ arty a turn and are pretty much guaranteed victory. The AI can't use the later units well at all. I do play on the hardest difficulty level, but I really try not to get into any modern wars because that mean 1 hour for every turn.

No matter what the difficulty level, I sometimes find early wars unavoidable. If you're playing with max civs, it's not uncommon to find yourself hemmed in and denied access to key resources, and war is often imminent. Just pick your enemies carefully.

I ausually wait 'til I get Sun Tzus Art of War, the build tons & tons of Medieval Infantry (and a few knights, but they take like, twice as long to build) and attack my neighbours. I'm playing a game on Regent at the moment, and I'm hoping to conquer the 3 other civs (all fairly small, but if I conquered them all, I'd be huge) on my continent by the time I have communism.

Who do I upgrade warriors to swordsmen. and any other unit?
To upgrade the unit you must upgrade the unit with in a city that has a barracks in it. You must have the required resources for the unit and gold to cover the cost of the unit upgrade.
