Very, very slow turns

My friend & I recently purchased Civ 5 with the sole purpose of playing online, and the game is virtually unplayable. The game runs quite well initially...but as the game progresses, turns begin to take 2-3+ minutes. We have yet to make it past turn 200 or so before we give up.

Our PC specs are essentially the same. Fast internet connections as well.

I've heard that the Multiplayer in Civ 5 is terrible.

Well, tuns out that I have a lot of slowdown in single player as well in-between turns. It's not as bad as multiplayer...but damn, it gets annoying when I'm waiting more than I'm actually playing.
