Does anyone know of a relatively good, cheap video card that is compatible with up to AGP 2x. I am currently running an 8mb Matrox Millenium G200 that can't do 1024x768 without a painful flicker. Any suggestions?

If you use it mainly for office application any modern graphic-card would do, the new Matrox G550 is supposed to have the best 2D-Quality available

The GeForce 4 MX 420 64MB is only 68 bucks at www.newegg.com. I run 1024x768x32bit@85Hz.

ATI RageII /PRO cards with 32MB (25-30€). Cheap and they'll do just fine. If you are running office applications that APG 2x is not necessary. Only if it's an compatibility issue with your motherboard.

I have Gigabyte MayaII card (RAGE 128 ULTRA chip) 32 MB on my working rig and it does it's job well and is compatible up to AGP4X

Are you sure it's not your monitor that flickers?

And welcome to CFC torrasque :)

Don't buy a RAGE card! I had one, and bought Medieval: Total War and was unable to play it. If you want to play modern games, get at least a 64 MB card. I purchased a KYRO II 64 MB card, and now it works fine. The best thing about this card is it's price - they can be had for around $40 on eBay, and it is AGP compatible.

I don't think he is in a hurry to play such games considering his current gcard ;) He just wants to get rid of the flicker.

I suppose I should have mentioned this in the beginning... WE got this computer second hand from a university. It is really old (400mhz celeron) and I'm trying to upgrade it so I can play some newer games (the newest I've got is either Civ3 or RA2). I also want to get better performance out of Half-Life (runs at about 20 fps).

You definately want a GForce 3 or better then.

Half-Life uses hardware accelerated T&L (Texture and Lighting), and since lots of processing is done on the card itself, it is less painful to your main CPU. The GForce3 I believe does a hell of a lot of other things on the board itself, this is all good news for you.

And definately get a 64Mb version of you can afford it. A GForce3/4 Ti200 is fine, you don't need the top-spec models, they cost about twice the price for very little performance increase.
