I wanted to know if anyone changed their virtual memory settings, and if it might help your performance. Mine is currently set at 768mb and I was wondering if I increased it if it would help my performance. Anyone that has tried it, please reply and let me know if its worthwhile or not. Thanks for any information provided.

The answer to your question probably requires more detail like your physical ram amount, processor speed, ... But I just recently read that 1.5 to 3 times your physical ram is good for virtual ram. But if you have a bunch, like 2 GB it might be better to turn off virtual memory. That's what they said, can't remember where I read it. I went with 1.5 GB min 3 GB max, with 1 gig of RAM. It's also what Windows suggested. Your mileage may vary.

Upgrading the main RAM will be a better choice. It will take some load off the HD and will the game will be quicker. As Ljdjr suggested, 1.5 to 3x of the main RAM is good amount although I would set both the inital value and max value to the same amount as Windows will fragment the pagefile over time adding a slightly increased load on the HD. To start with, turn the VM off - set to 0, restart, defrag the HD then set the VM to what you want and restart again. Hopefully, it should put most of the pagefile in one place.

Thanks for your help guys. My computer is capped out at 1 gig of ram and a processor speed of 2.4 ghz with a 128 graphics card. I'll go ahead and try increasing the virtual ram after I defrag the hd first. Thanks again for the advice.

Interesting...ProTools runs best with the VM turned off on both my PC (2 GHz Pent 4, 1 GB RAM) and my Laptop (1.8 GHz Pent 4M, 1 GB RAM). But y'all think Civ4 would do better with it on?

Nothing is better than actual RAM, plus the more you have of it the better. VM depends on the speed of the HD and if the pagefile is fragmented. Although these would only slighty slow things down having more system RAM is alot better than falling back on the HD in all cases.
