it was always for me, maybe it was just the AI but the next time i went by a few turns later it was gone

I highly doubt the AI would clean pollution from volcanoes. Unless it was in their territory but usually the AI doesn't clean anything. It's probably like you said, just the pollution clearing from the next erruption.

The AI use automated workers though.

Even if they did it would take a long time before pollution would be cleared from volcanoes. About 32 turns if just one worker clears it.

I automated my workers once, early in a game. I found myself wondering where all my workers had gone, only to find them de-toxing a friggin' mountain tile that had been polluted by a volcano. Doh!
