I just recently upgraded from 98 to XP. Civ3 ran perfectly under 98 with the same hardware I'm using now. I'm now running XP Pro with a Voodoo5 (3rd party drivers from 3dfx Underground- work great on all other games tried) and an Aureal Vortex SQ2500 sound card with the default drivers XP wanted to install for it (yes apparantly I have a proclivity for purchasing products from companies about to go out of business).
Here's what happens:
Game starts fine, I see Firaxis splash screen followed by the intro movie with no problems. All graphics and sound are correct. The game menu comes up fine. The in game option screens come up fine. The game loads and displays fine and brings up the first box telling you who you are and your starting techs, etc.
But, the entire game play portion of the screen is black (the part where you see your guys/cities etc- I can see the icons for the game menu and the game status box where it tells you the date and what unit/city you're clicked on). I can't remember if on this initial screen you're supposed to be able to see your settler yet or if you have to close the pop-up with the starting information before you see your settler.
At any rate, before I can close the pop-up to find out, the sound starts looping and then I get an error from XP telling me Civ3 "has encountered a problem and must close" at which point the game closes out.
Here's what XP tells me the error is when I click on the thing to get more information:
AppName: civilization3.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: opengl32.dll
ModVer: 1.0.0.761 Offset: 0000687e
I guess this means it's having a problem with my opengl32.dll driver file? If so that really stinks because this file works fantastic with Tribes2 and MOHAA among other games and I am not willing to replace it.
I know with some games you can put driver files in the game directory to have the game run from those files instead of the ones in the system or system32 folder. Does anyone know if this works with Civ3? Any other ideas?
