probably sums up Team B best of all...

Returning to a more mature discussion, I'm quite pleased how by how much the games have diverged, bearing in mind that we didn't plan beforehand to take such different approaches. Will be very interesting to discuss once the games have been completed, particularly regarding the peace vs. war angle. I've peeked a couple of times up 'til now, but I think I will stop as I am now eager to read the Team B story in its entirety without further spoilers.

Ah Scowler never loose that "inner child". But yes it is interesting and I felt in the beginning Team A was doing better in research/religion. I think we are all peeking out of curiosity. Perhaps a good example of an approach to a higher level is the SG Acid-03. They played on immortal and was enlightening on their approach. This game seems to be part brawn, luck and skill. It would be interesting to stay out of each others thread to see how we end up.

I always enjoy a competitive spirit isn't that what the west was built on.

Off topic:

ChrTh talk about competitive spirit how about those "Hurricanes". Boohoo Edmonton lost.....

Give Edmonton credit: they could've folded after Roloson went down (in fact, it's arguable they did fold game 2--gee, I bet they wish they had that game to play again, huh?). Instead, they played their hearts out andcamethisclose to stunning the Hurricanes. They were a worthy opponent and I'm glad they gave it their all--it makes the victory that much sweeter! :D

Edit: wrong thread! Oops, sorry :crazyeye:

...
....but since I'm here already: What hurricanes are you talking about?

What hurricanes are you talking about?

The Carolina Hurricanes... won the Stanley Cup (Hockey) beat Edmonton Oilers. (booohoooo Cup south of the border again)

They were a worthy opponent and I'm glad they gave it their all--it makes the victory that much sweeter!

hear, hear

:cringe: I can't help but reckon that the warring-strategy of the beta-team seems to have put them in a better shape than us. Since I am a peaceful but insane builder at heart this makes me wonder.

Maybe I shall put some effort in developing my offensive trait? :mischief: BA, - :twitch: - can you provide any help?

Love, Murdoch

@Dot,

I am a combo player who likes to build and stage war. I do tend to want to overwhelm the enemy which takes more time to do. I am learning from teammates that less is ok and just have to improvise. In SP games I tend to seek out at least one AI to take out in the beginning as a means to expand. I have found from Prince and up that a game without war is rare if you wish to gain the upper hand. (unless of course you are on a continent by yourself which I do not like as then you stall tech wise)
Capturing a capitol tends to make your empire strong since they usually are in the best location.

Some things in the B team we could have done different. Done more tech trading and not worry about the AI getting an advantage. On emperor they have an advantage already and the human player needs all the techs it can trade for. By the time we decided we should trade for it the AI would have it. I feel our team is doing well. We have good communication and a clear goal. Winning hasn't been discussed much but just getting by scratching little by little to a higher score which puts us in second last position. (after all of that fighting) but the range isn't that big anymore.

We could have hired specialists sooner and focused more on science. We didn't get to build a wonder but captured one which helped with our GP's.

When I look at Team-alpha I saw in the beginning a good approach to science. Unfortunately Team-alpha needed more cities and no room to expand so what's left. HMMMPHH war.....what is good for......absolutely nothing......but getting some cities.....in civ.

Unless you have a powerhouse of a capitol it is difficult to muster a force against an huge AI so I will be very interested to see what direction Team-alpha will take. You have some excellent players so I will watch with anticipation. The game is still young and Team-Beta has been lucky that Julius was a good boy for so long.

Scowler's last post in Team alpha is just an example of how brains can outwit brawn. It was either "pure genius" or just plain luck. Either way what a way to win. This is the kind of ingenuity I think will get Team alpha a win. I have faith in the PA as I too in a SP was in 4th place and no chance of winning unitl a civ came out of the blue (we were fighting the same enemy) and offered a Pa. I accepted of course and won the game via diplomacy. I was behind in tech and with the PA gained all those techs too. I hope that Team Beta may have an opportunity to use this approach which can be iffy but if you can pull it off what a way to win. Mind you I do enjoy "the glory of battle" but even better with a PA partner. The PA was discussed at length in SGOTM01 but never came to fruition. I haven't followed it lately but did anyone do that?

Sounds like it might be time to start up another VQ SG

VQ07 - Snakes!

Restricted City placement as determined by the ever popular on cell phones and other lite sites:

  • Each city must be placed adjacent (ie 5 tiles) in a N,S,E,W direction to the previous city.
  • If at any time the "snake" can only expand into its own body, the snake is dead and no further cities are permitted.
  • If at any time the "snake" can only expand into water, then the snake my tunnel through the water and come out at any location adjacent to the same body of water.
  • The first (and only the first) city captured from an enemy AI or the barbs spawns a new snake. Snakes may not cross each other.

No idea on leader/level/map type or size/ai count. So that would be up to the group that decides to play. Obviously priority to VQ-vets (played at least one VQ game), then VQ lurkers, then general populace. Any intrest?

Why'd it have to be snakes?

Not going to be able to play (taking a little break after my current games finish in prep for Warlords), but I think Peter would be a good choice for the variant.

Well done, team A! and its time to buck up, team B! ... ok, I admit itys partly my fault for delaying team B a bit ...

Yeh but that delay gained us a considerable tech advantage. So it was certainly worth it. How many techs did you gain Greyfox in that turnset like 4 or so and all the trading in resources too. And yes of course Well done Team A......Interesting idea Bobrath....

I've had it with these mother**** snakes on this mother**** map!

I have an SG winding down, so I might be interested, but I was thinking about running my own variant game when that ends... :D Here's another option that might make the snake layout a bit more interesting:

Instead of building N, S, E, W, you can build diagonally using optimal city spacing (so 3NW1W, or 3NW1N, etc.) It would give more options (making the variant easier) but would also make the lines more "snakey" as you have more "wiggle room" to loop backwards. :)

Isn't there a custom map that wraps on both the north-south and east-west axes? That could be fun for this.

That's a nice idea for the more snakey approach. Course its easier to think in straight lines!

:woohoo: Snakes? Well, why not. :woohoo: But I'll be quite busy for the next 6 to 8 weeks or so  because I'm moving south. :woohoo: Because I've got the job I've been applying for. :woohoo:

BTW, if you're wondering what all the :woohoo:ing and :dance:ing is about: The World Cup!!! Germany vs. Argentina - 5:3. :woohoo:

Reminder: I'll be oop from tomorrow 'til monday.

Regards, .

Thank You! :hatsoff:

How far south Dot......To the friendly city of Munchen...
The latitude of the town is pretty much the same as München ... a few minutes more south. Does the term radiant minutes (or something alike) exist in the english language? I just don't know. :crazyeye: But the place I'm moving to is approx 200 km to the west of München - that'd be approx 124.27423844746678 miles :mischief:.

@eektor: Welcome back! Hope you've had a good time! ;)

@dot Thanks, I had a good time. Unfortunately I missed the Germany - Argentina game because I spent the whole day traveling too. It looks like I missed a great game too.

I think I'm up for snakes but since its one of those predetermined city sites it might be best we go all the way down to prince level.
