Wait for the patch before you buy.

I have been playing civ games for almost twenty years now.
I have worked in the games industry for over ten years.
Civ is probably my favorite game.

For whatever reason, this game is not finished and is a waste of your money.

What will be fixed in the inevitable patch:
-terrible, constant crashes and graphics glitches.
-awful balancing and AI issues; it feels like a beta version.

What probably will never be fixed:
-the depth of a civ game is completely missing. Not sure I it can be patched back in. The combat system is awesome, but nothing else in the game is worth doing. Every building and wonder and government choice has been turned into a stat modifier. City states are an interesting idea, but once again, just another stat modifier. The wealth of unique choices that have been traditionally scattered throughout a civ game's centuries have all been removed. Civ IV was fantastic and mesmerizing in its complexity, and Civ Rev was spectacular in it's simplicity. Civ V tries to capture both and achieves neither.

Ironically, the game feels closest to Call to Power, the bastardized Activision version, which had none of the magic.

Civ III was wobbly on release, because it introduced some new concepts which weren't truly realized until Civ IV. But it was still playable. This is not, unfortunately.

Sorry, guys. I'm gonna give it another couple days, but the longer I play the more I just want to play Civ IV, which I'll probably reinstall.

I'm having a great time with the game. No major problems so far. No crashes. Buy it now! ;)

I loved Civ III and played Civ IV for all of like a couple of hours before disliking. It seems like it's a matter of taste really.

I think it's great that Firaxis is trying out new things (and bringing back a few old things). I agree that technical glitches are sometimes annoying, but that happens with almost every game.

A game developer can't please everyone. :)

Waiting to buy until a quality patch is released is a good call.

edit: It's not a question of liking the game or disliking it. This game has some gamebreaking bugs. Some are seemingly technical issues while some are game systems / mechanics not working correctly or working in ways that might disrupt a game. A couple of examples include:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=381428
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=381634

I also read about a bug where a unit during the early game would be promoted to something like a rifleman / infantry from ruins I believe and would subsequently own the entire map.

Without any mods or expansions I'm having a blast so far which I couldn't say for Civ 4 on release. Makes me sorta drool to think how far this game can go with all the great modders out there. I'm glad I spent the 60 bucks to play this game other then how it has effected my sleep. :P

I've got some graphical things going on with redrawing the terrain, but I think that's more my card than anything.

Also, Old Faithful seems to have a goody hut on top of it--odd, but certainly not gamebreaking.

Lol. It appears the 2K Marketing department is in the house.

(You have to make a logical argument as to why the removal of depth makes for a better Civ experience, when Civ Rev already did it.)

If you're enjoying the game, that's great! But it is not better. There's just no intelligent way to make that argument. Saying "I love it, can't please everyone" is just a smokescreen. Most people on these forums talk intelligently about strategy and quality.

Anyway, please ignore the marketing folks and AAVE your money. For now.

Really? I haven't seen many complaints about this. I guess I haven't looked in the technical issues forum but usually if it's widespread it would spill over to other forums and I just haven't seen it. The game has a lot of flaws but I don't count stability as one of them.

To me, the point of spending money on a game is so that I can play and enjoy that game. If I enjoy the game, it's money well spent, correct?

And I agree, that depth is lacking in areas (diplomacy for one), BUT that doesn't make the game bad and certainly doesn't make it not enjoyable for many. As I mentioned, we all of different tastes - enjoyment is an opinion - and we all have a right to our own. :)

I enjoy the game and it was money well spent.

The game is more than playable and all the same concepts are there and in my view the game is deeper than civ4. It needs some patches, but Civ4 needed expansions to get where it was.

I guess everybody have their opinion. I say buy it and enjoy the game now and for many years to come.

The point is to buy a game that is better and/or more fun than the one you already have. I'm sure some people can have a ton of fun with a bag of old bottlecaps, but I wouldn't recommend they pay for privilege.

If you can't talk in depth about WHY you prefer the game, everyone knows you're a PR lurker.

Yeah, look out, there are spies everywhere.

I DON'T KNOW if I prefer the new one or not, yet, having only played it only a few hours and being one of those pesky folks that like to have information and experience before forming an opinion.

However, as far as the issue with bugs and waiting for a patch goes, I don't see anything that says that you should wait because the game's unplayable the way it is. That's different than liking the game, though, and I'm sure you know that.

Okay...so we agree that the point is to buy a game that is better/or more fun than the one you already have.

Fact - I prefer Civ V to Civ IV because I find Civ V more enjoyable.

So why shouldn't I have spent money on Civ V? By your logic, I should have.

no crashes here. But this thread is made for every new game that comes out. All I can say is this game is stable on my system ( at least the dx9 version I do not have windows 7 yet ).
As for game balance, yes the Ai needs to learn some lessons and the civ specials do seem a bit unbalanced, but really isn't the game to new to be sure? Looking at previous civs patches have learned the ai some tricks based on our feedback and gameplay styles, how else do you think BTS became such a challenge? The community has allways been heavily involved in the development of the game, having the game now makes you a part of that.
I expect to see archers nerfed in first patch heh.

I haven't had any crashes yet and I'm on turn 300 in the modern era.

I'm still a bit undecided on the game when it comes to whether I like it more than Civ4 or not. I do have a lot of fun playing Civ5 (when I'm awake enough), though I've twice now fallen asleep while playing Civ5. I simply can't stay up to play it - it doesn't hook me as much as Civ4 does. Now, maybe this will change when I learn more about the game and get more into it - time will tell.

I still think it's worth the buy, but waiting for a patch might be good in case you'd be one to get crashes.

Lol. Okay, I'm done. I remember now why I never post on forums.

You liking it is not an argument for why you like it, see? It's a twelve year old's argument, reminiscent of bad book reports.

The combat system is awesome--I guess if you just build a couple of cities and an army, and move around the map, it could be fun, but that's not Civ, hasn't been for twenty years. And, as I've said three time now CivRev already did it way better! If you like CivV, you will LOVE Civ Rev, and should be playing that.

My game crashes about once an hour, on good hardware. I think there's a problem with the intro movie, which seems to try and play in the background even after you watched it and are in the game.

But anyway, nevermind. You guys have fun. I'm gonna dig out Civ4.

Personally I love the dumbed down version of civ 5 over the civ 4 engine. I hated the complexity in a game I viewed as a strategic domination game. I never wanted the diplomatic ties, or 'extra' ways to win the game.

This game is exactly what Civ Should have been from the start, down and dirty fighter. You obviously liked the complexities of the older versions, its a niche market in the big scale of things and they know it. todays gamers want the dirty deeds fast and furiously. and for those that want it, this IS a better game then the previous ones.

Disable the intro video. I did it immediately after watching it once. You get a black screen for a few seconds while it loads on startup, but you won't have to watch any videos.
