is this normal? I have to wait and watch the opponents attack...any way of disabling or turning this off or do i just have to deal with it?

it's a turn based game. So it's not possible to make it different you want. But when playing right it's easy to beat the game. Remember that they can attack but when they are finished you can kick some ass. An whole turn long...
You don't have to watch the enemy move. While in a game go to Game > Game Options> and uncheck "Show enemy moves." You can also check "No pause after enemy moves."
You will still have to wait while the CPU thinks and completes it's moves, but because the game does not then have to show you each and every move it's making at a speed that a human can comprehend, your wait time will be greatly reduced.

Also remember that barbarian movements will always be shown in detail, especially after apollo's and after you know the entire map. Other than that just as one of the posters above said, these two options work wonders.
