This is an odd war, with odd results.

It was between Chile against Peru and Bolivia and it mark the destiny of the three countries, specially some develop opportunity to Chile until today, and the lack of development to Bolivia and Peru.

The strange thing was that, the worst prepared and weak country on those days, Bolivia, start the war against chile, and then Peru enter also cause it had a defense pact with Bolivia. In the end, Chile grab riches lands to Bolivia and Peru and cut the ocean access to Bolivia.

Anyone here know about this war, and have some opinions?

Here are some facts:

State Entry Exit Combat Forces Population Losses
Bolivia 1879 1884 80000 3000000 1000
Chile 1879 1884 50000 6000000 10000
Peru 1879 1884 40000 2750000 1000

War of the Pacific, Spanish GUERRA DEL PACÍFICO (1879-83), conflict involving Chile, Bolivia, and Peru, which resulted in Chilean annexation of valuable disputed territory on the Pacific coast. It grew out of a dispute between Chile and Bolivia over control of a part of the Atacama Desert that lies between the 23rd and 26th parallels on the Pacific coast of South America. The territory contained valuable mineral resources, particularly sodium nitrate.

The bolivians vastly overestimated their capacity, just like they did in the Chaco War againt Paraguay. In the Pacific War they suffered an even greater beating, since Chile was much stronger than Paraguay. Their humiliation was complete, with their capital occupied and losing some of their very best provinces, and of course the access to the ocean.

Chile was outnumbered by the bolivian/peruvian alliance, but their soldiers had better equipment and better training, and most importantly, they actually had good strategists in their Army.
