I have attempted to play the giant Warhammer 40k map with all civs having their first city on the Earth part of the map and their starting position on their own "planet".

https://forums.civfanatics.com/resources/warhammer-40k-galaxy.24653/

But the map is simply too large both for fun gameplay and my computer (turntimes in the middle ages about 5 - 10 minutes until the data causes Civ3 to hang up).

Is there a more or less easy way to resize the map? I have not found anything yet in the forums.

Thanks!

EDIT: Changed thread title. Originaly it was "Resize existing map?"

There is a map resizer program. I used it once or so, but I dont remember much on it.

You can't simply rescale a map the way you would change the scale of an image or print something at half-size. Cropping is fairly simple, re-scaling takes a lot more work.

The "simplest" way i know of to rescale a map is to use Quintillus' Editor. this would involve:
  1. taking a screenshot or getting a bmp of the map as it is now by some other means
  2. changing the mode of the image to make getting the terrain right terrain in the right place easier
  3. rescaling the image without dithering to match the exact dimensions needed by Quintillus Editor for the size of map you want
  4. using the editor to input & translate the bmp image into a map
  5. importing rules from the original biq to the new map / biq
  6. redrawing all the rivers in the editor
  7. changing the terrain where needed for aesthetic & gameplay purposes. Depending on the map & how much smaller the new version is this can take quite a while since most of the things that were only a couple of tiles wide in the original - such as isolated mountains or small islands - will have disappeared.
  8. If you went the other way - made the new map larger than the old - the terrain editing can be just as complicated. Need to add variation to the huge blocks of identical terrain.
  9. placing all the starting units, cities, resources, etc to match the original larger map as closely as possible.
which is basically only a couple of shortcuts - starting with a map image, importing rules, and using the pre-existing graphic/text files - in the process of making a biq from scratch.

Thank you all so far.

I am aware and willing, that I have to rework and adjust a resized map. ;)

I have found and tried Map Tweaker (is this the program mentioned by Nathiri?), but it seems that the WH4K-map is too large for that too. Unlike many other maps its is able to load WH4K, but gives an error message, then trying to resize it from its 800x162 to a more handable 400x80. .

I will give Steph´s Editor and the BMP-Import of Quintillus Editor a try.

Otherwise I will make a similar, but smaller map based on one of the smaller Earthmaps (hopefully copy with Maptweaker will work).

EDIT: I have expanded an existing Earth (80x80) to 480x100 using Steph´s Editor and have allready replaced all the desert placed into the new expanded area by ocean, cleaned the former map borders and set the capitals (for balance about a third is placed there they do not belong ;)).

The first step is taken.

The cradle of Humanity is mostly ready.

Next are the "planets".

While it is only indirectly related to the starting question, I have some progress in my Galaxy map.

This is a typical starting island. I have done so far about 10 of them.

The fixed player 31 position is only temporary, so that I have enought islands for everyone. It will be replaced by a unspecified starting position.

Each player will have a city with two Pikeman and a Caravel at Earth and an island with its usual starting settler and worker.

Aluminum and Uranium will be only available on empty islands and Earth.

The map will come without its own rule set, so I will have to search and strip the map of any preplaced resources that are not in vanilla Civ3 (Camels, Jade, Coffee, Crabs and others).

Also Earth and its islands (planets) will be connected via a single searoute, so thatthe Caravels are able to travel all around without waiting for Navigation or Magnetism. ;)

I am thinking of uploading the map in three versions:
- only one coastal city on Earth with two Pikeman and a Caravel.
- only starting positions on the islands with the regular starting units.
- coastal city on Earth and starting positions on the islands with the units mentioned above (this should also be default).

But I do not have yet a backstory of how this happenend to this Earth. ;)

Also I need to find the original creator of the Earth map I used as editing start.

No new pictures yet, but the first results from testplaying on the unfinished map.

On the Islandplanets I have observed some strange behaviour of the KI. About half of them killed their Worker and started to move their Settler all around on the island before building a city (sometimes even returning to their starting point!). This slows them significant down compared to the KI that settled immediatly (and do not kill their Workers). This seems to be independant to the status of their map (unfinished grasland only or fully build Islandplanet).

The Caravels have been replaced by Settlers in the Earth cities, because the KI simply rushed and settled on the closest to Earth Islandplanets, making them at their intended use as safe haven useless (especially if the original owner of that island still shuffled their Settler around!).

The second run without Caravels is so far more successful. The KI on Regent level managed to gain the ancient techs faster when I. Only in the Middle Ages I gained an advantage in sciences, as I managed to build the Great Lighthouse and so was able to settle on several free islands.

Portugal and China have been driven of Earth and are now on their Islandplanets (which gives them an unintented advantage against corruption as most of their cities are now next to their capital).

And Austria (replaces America) somehow managed to relocated their capital to Salzburg on their Islandplanet without losing Wien (but I am not sure if Wien was lost and then reconquered).

I will have to set up some more small islands as stepping stones, so that all players could leave Earth without the Great Lighthouse or Astronomy. By now the Great Lighthouse is a gamebreaker.

Just a screenshot from the still ongoing testrun.

Please not that Thebae (Thebes) is placed to form the Suezcanal. In Mesoamerica I did not place a Panama City, but by placing a settleable place between moutains, I encourage the KI to place a canal city (and the Aztec have done it ;) ).

A few KI players have only colonized a part of their island planet, but most of them have settled their island planet completly and some have also claimed some of the free island moons (and even on free spaces on the partly colonized island planets of other ;) ).

Also it seems, that I have miscounted the island planets. I found one completly free and claimed it for myself. ;)

I am in my first "real" playthrought on the map after several test runs.

And I have a list what to change in the second update.

Most important seems to me to rename some of the starting cities on Earth as in vanilla Conquest the Greek build the city of Athens right next to Athenai and the Egypts do the same with Thebae and Thebes... (they will become Waset (another name for Thebae) and Aigai (historical capital of Macedonia)). Some other cities will have to get the same treatment, but I am not sure what to do with Carthago.

This is the current status of Europa.

Fortunatly my own "planet" was very close to Earth, and so I concentrate my counter invasions of would-be-invaders right on Earth as some of the "planets" are even with a high tech navy very far away.

Paris was taken with Bombers and Paratroopers only. But I have lost two Zero Fighters against the three Dewoitine 520 Fighters. :undecide:

But I am impressed, that the English have taken the inland city of Lyons early in the game (before I could make contact with either French or English) without an english city on the continent. It seems that Elisabeth landed her forces in Germany or Russia to conquer that city.

Please note, that this is my private version of the map with additional resources (camels, coffee and so on).

I am open for suggestions. ;)

Thanks, Vuldacon!

Aside from some small map changes (missing sea tiles, Iceland with ice and game instead of grass and cattle) I have renamed some of the starting cities on Earth because of their different spellings in my own and vanilla civ.

Roma/Rome = Latinum (the province)
Athenai/Athens = Aigai (the "real" capital of Alexanders Macedonia ;) )
Thebae/Thebes = Waset (just another name for the same city ;) )
Carthago/Carthage = Tyros (it was originaly named Qart-Ḥadašt = "New Tyros")
Entremont = Tara (I have just kepted the capital from my celtic city list)
Amsterdam = Batavia (not because of different spellings, but because it is in Thailand/Indonesia)
Constantinopolis/Constantinople = Byzantium (its orginal roman name)
Lisboa/Lissabon = Rio de Janeiro (since it is at a similar place at the atlantic coast of South America.).

Also Portugal and Maya have switched their starting cities compared to the first map version.

Russia starts with St. Petersburg as capital (Moskwa became the russian capital much later).

And America also no longer starts with Wien (Vienna) but with Washington as capital.

I have not uploaded the new version yet.

Are these changes agreeable?

I have now attached the updated map to this thread, because the update in the Download Database insisted to keep the old file instead of the newly uploaded version. I have currently no idea why.

I have started a new game on the updated map (without extra resources for my own mod).

The first picture shows a problem only I should run in.

Karl, we need to speak about the name of your capital. ;)

The second picture is once again proof, that the german shortcut KI (Künstliche Intelligenz = Artifical Intelligence) stands really for Keine Intelligenz (No Intelligence).
