Shaka and I were each at war with Mehmed II but not as part of an agreement or alliance of any kind. I just captured Edirne, my first city captured from Mehmed II, and the next turn I get hte message that I have declared peace with Mehmed II. I had never been at war with him previously in this game and I did not attempt peace in any way.

My system: Pentium 4 3.0GHz, 1GB RAM, GeForce 7600GT card. Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 2 and all updates.

Civ 4: Vanilla Civ 4 patched to 1.61 then Warlords was installed. All in default directories. No mods.

OK, I figured this out. Turns out that Mehmad II is now a vassal of Shaka. I think this needs to be handled better. Instead of automatically ending all wars the moment one country becomes vassal to another, the game needs to open a negotiation screen offering the player to continue war (which would bring the parent country into war with the player) or negotiate a peace treaty.

Couldn't you just redeclare war?

Yes, but then you'll be at war with two civilizations.

My point is that the game gives zero reason for you suddenly being forced into peace. It simply says, "You made peace with XXX". I had to poke around to find out that XXX is now a vassal of YYY and that change caused me to automatically be at peace with XXX. I really think this needs to be handled better. Give the user a notice that says, "XXX has entered into a vassalage agreement under YYY. You can negotiate for a peace or continue war with the understanding that YYY will enter the war in support of XXX."

Feature, not a bug ;)

I'd like it to be changed as well... even if they didn't bother with renegotiations.

This caught me out, too, the first time. There definitely needs to be at least a message telling you about the new vassal relationship. I was very surprised when suddenly peace was declared!

There is a message for the creation of a vassal state and also when someone ends a vassal agreement. Maybe a more distinctive sound would help. If you just mouse-over the leader's name on the score list, it will show if they have any vassals or are a vassal.

I also think this should be changed.

In my game the Romans had been at war with the Persians for a long time but weren't getting anywhere because I was in between the two of them and hadn't allowed Open Borders with either.

Eventually, I declared war on the Persians and had just taken my first city when my war was ended because the Persians decided to become vassals of the Romans.

Frankly, it seems like a big AI cop-out. Get out of a bad situation by becoming a vassal and having EVERYONE have to make peace with you.

It also makes no sense from a real-world point of view. If country A is at war with both country B and country C (with B and C having no relations whatsoever between them), can they get out of BOTH wars by becoming a vassal of one? I don't think so.

Well Ideally the situation would be handeled with a Cease-Fire (that way you are not kicked out if you want to continue the War and they Capitulated to another AND you wouldn't automatically end up at war with your friend if you they Vassalized.)

Japan 1945

yes, but with Japan the allies agreed that Japan should become a vassal, China didn't just get back China and so Japan agreed to become a vassal of the US, Japan was bombed/nuked back into the stone age.
