I have an AMD64 with 256mb and an ATI card that uses win98. cIV worked fine except for slowness when map was revealed in the late game.

All pop-up windows (the blue boxes with grey buttons) and all text anywhere in the game is empty (the lone exception is the text that pops up when you hover the mouse over an item).

Any workarounds to get text to show up?

Same problem.

Worked great for Civ IV, but Warlords has no text.

If I start the game off the Civ IV CD the game still plays great, if I load the game off the Warlords CD the game plays great, but without any text.

I would like to play the new Civs, but can't if there is no text, diplo screens are blank.

Can the new Civs be copied over to the custom assets folder of the Vanilla Civ game.

I don't plan on getting a new computer until the spring after Windows Vista and the new Intel chip sets are available.

Is it possible that Windows 98 is just missing the fonts that are used.

The city names are still readable and the combat odds and a couple other text messages like founding of religions and wonders completed, etc...

It is just the interface text that is typically on buttons or in windows that is missing.

Thank goodness it is not only me... I also am waiting for vista.

In the meantime, I am trying fresh installs. Just tried one and it didn't work. Just uninstalled again and I am looking for threads to see if there is anything I have to do after uninstalling (registry directions or whatever)

The idea about the fonts is interesting, but why would we be able to see them civ4?

If there is a switch in the ini for selecting different fonts - feel free to jump in and inform us...

There is a mod to change fonts for vanilla civ4, it might be worth a shot though I severly doubt that it will be compatible.

I had the same problem. I think the following fixed it:

I search for every *.ttf file in the civ4 directory and copied them into the windows fonts directory in the system control.

What a GREAT third post!

Here are the details for a default install of cIV on win98:
Copy this file to get main menu text to appear...
C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Resource\Fonts\sylfaen.ttf
to this location...
C:\WINDOWS\FONTS
