Warlords sound problem: loud static outburst

I have been playing a game as the Vikings and I have encountered a sound problem which emits a momentary deafeningly loud outburst of static noise.
At first I wondered if maybe it was a hardware problem but this problem occured on both my laptop and my desktop computer which have completely different sound hardware. I think it may be a glitch in the Viking background music.

I noticed the same problem. Standard map - terra, epic speed, noble level. Since problem didn't exist with vanilla game, this is clearly an introduced bug.

I've been getting this problem too, and to help (someone) pinpoint it, it seems to be happening mostly in the Modern age when moving ships around shortly after promoting a unit. I think it may just have to do with overlapping sounds, though, as there aren't many times in the game when you'll have several overlapping sfx.

I had the same problem as well... It is deafening.

Sometimes when there is a Global Warning alert
Or when a ICBM is ready

I also would vouch for it not being hardware problem.

yeah its the modern era only as far as i can tell. Its a probelm on both my computers so its probably not hardware.

I got it aswell, Modern Era as the Celts. I was warring at the time, maybe an attack sound bug?

I got it as well in modern age. VERY LOUD. TOTAL reinstall... not fixed.

This did not happen ever before with civ iv.

Firaxis needs to FIX THIS!

Me too, modern era as the French, didnt notice pattern. Happened maybe once every half hour.

On board audio realtek 97
Geforce 7900GT

Never happened in Vanilla.

I have exact same problem as described above. Vanilla plays fine on my comp and have not had any sound problems with any other game. I hope they fix it soon as the sound glitch is like ten times louder than my normal playing volume. Sucks not to be able to enjoy the game sounds and music cause of this stupid glitch

Now that some other people have mentioned it I have also noticed that the sound problem seemed to happen only in the modern era. I recall it happening at one point when I sentried a frigate in a city. One other thing to note, after the loud static problem occurs the sound becomes buggy afterwards, with not all sounds functioning correctly, I believe the background music, and ambient background noise stopped completely, and I would sporadically hear some but not all of the sound effects in the game.

Actually I think mine happened first in Industrial era, but for sure it happens a ot in modern too.

I'm just glad its not my hardware, at first I was afraid my laptop's integrated sound was screwed and I started wondering if they have such a thing as PCMCIA sound cards. Glad I dont need it , but its nice to know they do exist:

I am having the same problem. It happens in the industrial era and above. And then the sound effects seem to go to crazy for a little while. It is very loud.

Happened twice: playing as the Celts, modern times, while being attacked by large stacks of Romans and Russians.

Possibly related; did not happen with base game:

Playing MP3's in WinAmp or WinMediaplayer in Civ/Warlords (music off in Civ). On exit from Civ the music becomes unlistenable due to distortion and "static" in the music playback.

I have the same problem, to fix it turn off the "Sound effects" box in the audio options menu. You won't be able to hear the battle sounds, which is where I believe it originates, but everything else will work. I know that fixed my problems.
