The reason why i'm saying this to you people who are going to china or so, don't, why? cause China is now becoming a anti-gamer state, where you can only play video games for 3 hours in a cyber cafe. Not only they started doing that, they are also setting up clinics that can "cure video game addictiveness", and other words, they saying we are a disease. Not only did they started doing this, but also Korea, and England are setting this stuff up too. If you want to go to a foriegn country, go to japan. that's the home of gaming right there.

Chinese culture praises hard workers, especially workaholics. So yes, game addiction can be a problem. I heard on the news of one gamer in China who actually DIED from gaming too much. He didn't leave his room for more than 3 days. He was eventually found... dead. Maybe it was malnutrition or something.

Gaming addiction is a problem wherever there are games. Like you said, China's not the only country with such anti-addiction programs. But just because they have such programs available doesn't mean you shouldn't go there. Dude, if you want to see where Civ got the idea for the Forbidden Palace (and other wonders), you're going to have to go China and see for yourself.

No it had to be dehydration, the human body can go three weeks without food.

What's the problem? Three hours in a cafe is prefectly fine, it's the decision of the people in charge. Gamers can still go home and play as long as they like.

:mischief: :p

Back on the subject. Its understandable they are worried when they have this going on almost nextdoor in S. Korea...

http://uk.gamespot.com/news/2005/06/20/news_6127866.html?sid=6127866 - baby dies after parents leave him home alone while playing Warcraft in an internet cafe

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4137782.stm - Man re-defines the word 'addiction' when he dies after a 50 hour Starcraft session

Note to self - dont play a game with '...craft' in the title for more than 24 hours, or while babysitting.

Not quite true, game development companies have to comply with the request of the government to be able to sell game in the area... one of these request is that gameplay in ALL games gameplay has to disintigrate after a specified time period to provide less incentive for the players to play, changes are already been made to games for this to happen.

Im not sure how recient the law is, but there was an article about it in pcpowerplay... i think it was. At least its not like that place (france? or somewhere) that banned them altogether for a short period.

You aren't aware of how hilarious this sounds, are you.

Abbo, no.

Never thought I'd find a Wapanese amongst a Civ community but here we are.

Wapanese? I'm geussing that's.... Wannabe Japanese? You really need to get a pie.

No link, no explanation, just hit-n-run spammy criticism of a foreign country suffixed with JAPANSUPERIORLOL, and to call such an OP Wapanese is somehow ignorant?

Calm down.

My friends in Hong Kong love video games, and one of them works part time in a video game store. Granted, HK is a Special Administrative Region, but I think if that were true they would at least hear about it.

They're normally pretty good at telling me stuff like that, especially about things they care about. While I have no doubt the Chinese government would interfere that way if it could, I don't think its going to happen anytime soon.

China and Japan are both great countries. It's the politicians that ruin it.

I was hoping that this thread would discuss China's rather rampant and ridiculous levels of censorship, such as the apparent renaming of Mao in the game as "great leader", and the forbidden palace as ... something else, I forget. Almost makes me want to code some kind of Falun Gong wonder.

No amazingly most games that have resulted in this have happened to be world of warcraft 3 and i heard a kid over there jumped off a roof copying a stunt out of final fantasy online its always the online games.

Im learning chinese, but when i go there, ill probably travel to their.. not-urban area (i also need to better my english), which is beautiful.

This thread is stupid, but not because of the generalization (someone probably mistranslated a chinese news article about a new law for cybercafes and now china is the nazi country of computer games), but because.. who would travel to another part of the world to waste his time playing civilization? Then you sugest.. go to japan instead! Oh yeah my knowledge of mandarin will really help me there!! Who would take such decision based on a lame post from a gaming forum!!! Argh, the levels of stupidity are hurting my advanced brain!!!!

Imo, 3 hours per day is too much, but you do whatever you want, and i agree we shouldnt have laws on that.
