Seeing as it's availible from Play.com for only a fiver, I thought I might ask the question. Is it worth it at that price? Would I like it enough to take out time from playing Civ IV, Company of Heroes, Medieval 2 Total War and other games?

You may get a fivers worth out of it but it's debateable especially as the games you quote are very different types. See other threads in this forum . If you like railroad business games I'd say RT2/3 are better. 2 Platinum is also available at a fiver (used). depends on what sort of a risk taker you are. RT Original is available for free download and is good if you dont mind the "graphics"

Granted a lot of people will disagree, but coming from someone who has never played the earlier incarnations, Railroads! is a very fun and very addictive game. It has its flaws, like Vista compatibility problems, limited maps, short playing time, etc. but the value and replay are fantastic. I picked it up new at a retail store for $20 and it was a steal then. At $5, it is a no brainer. The graphics are pretty, there is Internet multiplayer and there is a wonderful community of people who have created extra scenarios and maps.

Nothing holds to Railroad Tycoon Deluxe. I never liked the Poptop stuff = no signals and scenarios. And I certainly don't like SMRR. Deluxe was huge and expansive and great fun, with a sprawling network.

Transport Tycoon Deluxe was anther beauty. Wished they hadn't coped up the new version so bad. I always felt that that game could have been awsome if they'd made it so trucks killed trains in the short haul market. Trains destroyed everything in the game, making trucks more of a hobby than a stratagy. Still, it was amazing, espeically with the later mods that came out.

Definatly. I wouldnt buy this game. I still cant figure out why Sid even made this game. i mean who wants to buy a game about buildin railroads and talkin to weird train men. Very Very lame. Civilization is so much better you know!!!

Sid Meyer made this game the same reason Hironobu Sakaguchi made "Dirge OF cerberus".
He wanted to make a quick buck by selling out both his own name and the franchise.

I like the game

The game is not named Railroad Tycoon 4, so if that is what you are expecting (foolishly) then you will be disappointed.

I like the game. The 3D graphics are good enough to evoke the feeling of playing with miniature trains. Patched up to v1.1 it doesn't crash very often. Picked it up for $5 at a shop, worth every penny.

I was hoping for more from this game. It is still a fun game just not as deep as I was hoping. The maps are WAY too small. I thought when I bought it that the maps would be large and maybe even cover complete continents but I was disappointed. This is a game you play merly for fun and entertainment....it provokes much less thought then I was expecting. How ever I would still buy again

$5? Maybe worth it if you haven't played Railroad Tycoon 2 or 3, and for some reason can't get those. Railroads unfortunately suffers from very shallow gameplay compared to the earlier games, and is bugridden. The biggest problem i found however was the lack of content - it only has half a dozen maps all of which are tiny, and barely recognizable. This is literally less than 1% of the content of RRT2, and is still negligible compared to the scenarios and campaign in RRT3.
