WIth HBR in four turns, a war elepahnt army with 5/8 xp could go combat 1 + shock, an army for which there is no hard counter until pikeman. This combned with xbows or lbows, should keep us safe from attacks, though getting the ivory is a bt of a task.
 
I think we'll definitely be getting it when we can, I wouldn't place immediate priority on it though. India probably isn't settling there yet and we have too many other spots more important economically or strategically - maybe a few cities down the line.

I do agree that a WE army would be pretty effective against India - not worried so much about defense but for taking them out eventually it does pretty well, in almost all likelihood they will not have anything to counter. Plus I'd be really pleased if we can use both Elephants and our UU to gain a good amount of experience and set up really strong mid-game cavalry. (Come out of the gates with 3 promos and especially if we can keep some troops with free flanking promos around and upgraded.)

What's wrong with maces?
I predict that we'll have knights before we get to settle / capture an ivory city.

Which begs the question, if we're going to build our UU we better get a wriggle on...
 
The most advanced unit that the Mavericks will get is probably crossbowmen (they've said that they are going for machinery), which is a problem for macemen. Our unique unit and elephants can both take on spearmen fairly well. I like the idea of war elephants, numidian cavalry and catapults conducting our police action in India.
 
WEs get he bonus xp from stables, and with vassalage + theocracy we could have Combat2 Shock WEs running around destroying anything they want

Also, we found there is two ivory, which means we can trade it to someone for horse if we can't find any.
 
Nothing's wrong with maces, we'd certainly have a couple in a stack anyway (all horse/mounted units is foolish if they could just build tons of spears). But we'd get more XP and probably better long term prospects with mounted for now, I'm thinking.

Though again I don't think we have to settle this quite yet, and eventually conquering it or nearby lands is still a possibility.

I don't think we'll have to switch to knights quite yet, maybe a while out but we won't have to trade for Guilds immediately if we have something good going.

For that matter, we probably do want to be looking at our HE somewhere though. Currently Singularity is not a bad candidate; a couple mainland cities could be pretty solid too though. If our warrior gets the XP off of barbs all the better - if not we probably can still get it off of barbs with another unit. I'd love to have 3x Promo'd units out of the gates with stables, some civic, generals, and HE.
 
Singularity is a perfect place for the Heroic Epic. Good production and it's well protected on our island.
