Which unit do you think is the best unit to use when breaking through an enemy line to exploit flanking bonuses

Infantry coordinated with artillery/bombers, or Tanks that coordinate with artillery or bombers?

Perhaps tanks would work best because they have the most strength, or perhaps infantry would be best to force a breach through the enemy lines because tanks and mechanized infantry could follow through and attack the enemy's rear.

Well Flanking bonuses are best if the enemy unit is surrounded, which is easier to do with Tanks because they move faster than Infantry.

If you are comparing Modern Tanks and Mech Infantry, the Modern Tanks would be better because they are stronger.

But in that case Paratroopers would probably be useful for the 'surround' factor.

oh yes, paratroopers would make a great unit to send out in some "opening attack" in an invasion.

No, I'm not comparing modern armour to mech infantry. My question is basically: Should slow-moving infantry force the breach, or should tanks force the breach? It's between those two because even in modern times, you're going to have large amounts of infantry because mechanized infantry is limited by aluminum, while infantry is not (hopefully)

Just a quick aside not related to your main point: Are you sure Mechanized Infantry is an Aluminum unit? On Arioch's site their resource is listed as "?" so they may be the endgame resourceless unit.

Um, it's not listed as aluminum (?), It just says that aluminum is required. Now if mechanized infantry really is a late-game resource-less unit, then that makes my question moot, but I think that it is limited by aluminum, so therefore your army will have mech infantry and tanks to engage in limited offensive battles, but you will still have a core of infantry

Note: even resourceless units are limited by maintenance costs.

In any case, I'd probably use the resourceless units to provide the flanking bonuses, and fast resource units to do the actual killing (from the flanks)

Hmm, there's some conflict on Arioch's site. Take a look at the table on this page, there's no resource listed on it. I hadn't bothered looking at the detailed entry.

Okay I guess there must be some evidence though that it is an aluminum unit or it wouldn't be listed in the detailed entry.

EDIT: Looks like this issue was already discussed pretty thoroughly on this thread. It seems everyone there is assuming the mech inf does in fact require aluminum. I couldn't find a screen shot that proves it though.

2nd EDIT: One other point: If Infantry is the last general-purpose resourceless unit then the French have a UU (Foreign Legion) that is never obsoleted, making them the only civ with that ability.

I hope that there is a lot of aluminium everywhere then, otherwise modern warfare will end up as a bit of an anti climax.

I hope that there isn't aluminium everywhere, but that certain units like mech inf do not have an aluminium requirement.

I really hope that there is still some tension between jet fighters, stealth bombers, modern armor, rocket artillery and missile cruisers.

Note: even resourceless units are limited by maintenance costs.

All your units are also limited by a unit cap. See Arioch's site.

"There is now a hard cap on the number of units your empire can support. It is calculated as (Base Supply + Number of Cities + Number of Citizens). For Normal difficulty, Base Supply appears to be 5. So this number is fairly generous; Greg Laabs said the only time he has run up against this cap is when trying to build a large early army with only a single city."

In which case the constraint isn't really binding, so it doesn't really affect your army size.

I hope that paratroopers are going to be more useful than in civ 4 because they could move only one tile which was really poor for a such desant units;).
