I think, when we play Civ, at least when *I* play Civ, we want to see the "what ifs" with some historical and realism in it. I love history, I'd devour any history book in an instant, especially history of ancient worlds. However, I'd like to ask the "what ifs" questions about history.
What if Julius Caesar or Augustus Octavianus has never changed Rome from Republic to Dictactorship? What if Western Roman Empire, or Eastern Roman Empire survived instead of crumbled into history text? What if Napoleon Boneparte did not make the mistake of warring with Russia during Winter, so on and so on.
I know I play Civ not to emulate the WHOLE historical event, but to certain extend, we want to know how we avoid the mistakes made by those Empires when they crumbled. I like to have some degree of realism, but I do not want to follow the line of history exactly the same. The idea of play Civilization game is to try to see all the "what ifs", and, of course, enjoy making your own history with all your decisions and the consequences/outcomes out of those decisions.
