What are the military units that can benefit from west point? Does it include air and naval units also?

I know on the face of it that might seem pedantic but it naval units can benefit from the extra experience then I think it is best that this wonder goes in a coastal city.

Well, I think that both air and naval units would fulfill the requirements. But by the time air units become available, you should probably have the West Point built. Even a controlled warmonger like me gets the West Point ASAP even if it means crushing one of my "friends" to get the level 6 unit.

As for coastal city having the west point, I generally avoid that unless it has very high hammer potential. I don't need level 3-4 naval units as the AI is not good at naval warfare. I would rather crank out tanks with 3-4 promotions. West Point + IronWorks = awesome military potential.

I generally go for West Point + Heroic Epic, and save Ironworks for my wonder-spamming city. If I have any good production cities on the coast(doesn't have to be the best production city), I will put it there, because especially in BtS a good navy is more important then ever before. Take my last game for example: I managed to get a city on the coast with 3 clams and 3 riverside plains(netting a total of 24 food after Biology) that also had 9 Plains Hills, one of which with Copper, in the BFC. That quickly became my military city. Pre-Astronomy the A.I. and I were having caravel wars across the continent(I had to sink his caravels, otherwise he would sink my gallery when I was moving troops across) and having my caravels start with lv3 promotions was a godsend.

I like a coastal secondary military city with Moai Statues, Red Cross, and Military Academy for my navy.

I never really got the point of Red Cross. I mean, sure it's a free promotion, but Medic does not stack, and by that point you're likely to have a unit with Medic III or Woodsman III(Or Both), which makes all your other units with Medic completely worthless, unless for some reason they're fortified in enemy territory outside your SoD.

Whoa, I never knew that, Med promo doesn't stack?

And I always keep several Med II scouts in the same stack for quicker healing.

Nope. The same promotion will not stack. Additional promotions on the same unit will boost the healing rate, but not different promotions on different units. If you keep all your units in the same stack, you will only need one Medic unit. The best Medic will have both Medic III and Woodsman III. This requires a GG for Medic III, but I would say it's worth it. Just don't risk the medic in battle.

Note that having two units, one with Medic III and one with Woodsman III, will not provide additional healing. Only the one with Medic III will(Because it has the highest healing amount), the Woodsman III unit will not be counted at all. If you have a unit with Woodsman III and another unit with Medic I, only Woodsman III will be counted.

This is why I like the Red Cross for my navy. Often the ships are isolated and the Medic promotion is useful.

Red Cross and West Point can actually work together, though it may be overkill. Every promotion you get can be handy, and medic opens up March. Not an issue for Mech Inf, but nice on other units. In any case, it is a free promotion which can always come in handy.

A free medic promotion means that you can spend three promotions for Woodsman III and have a healer as good as a Medic III (albeit in one square). You can easily have more than enough medics to supply all your fronts from this, and you could always put a general on one if you wanted to push for the ultimate Medic III/Woodsman III combo.

Red Cross is great for ships, which is why I always pick a coastal city for it. Every transport can heal its passengers, every carrier its planes, and your fleets will always have extra healing handy to survive attacks without retreating.

If I've already settled some generals, stacking West Point on that can be quite nice. You can even have Commando units churned out in quantity (if charismatic or aggressive).

Air and sea units often fight without support -- there is no way to soften up an enemy interceptor with artillery -- so giving them an extra promotion can be life or death. Air units have little chance to get experience, yet another reason to build them with as much as you can give.

In my view, the free Medic from Red Cross is most valuable because it is the prerequisite for March, which I feel is a very underrated promotion. Mechs are obviously awesome because of March, and Navy SEALs are actually very effective due to it. So it gives you the flexibility to slap march on eligible units.

Regarding putting West Point in a coastal city. I almost always do that on a map with multiple landmasses. Drydock + West Point + General/Pentagon/Civic gives you a 10XP transport out of the gate, which you can slap Flanking + Nav 1 & 2 on for the fastest transports/aircraft carriers in the game. It also gives you great flexibility for your other ships.

The only thing I ever thought of is putting it in a high hammer city and spamming out march units :/. Not terribly useful. It's probably a better national wonder on later era starts, where that free medic promo will really help toward the woods/medic III combo (you essentially get 2 free promos for the purposes of that, since you don't have to take combat/drill I and medic I, you start with m I immediately).

I guess I can see it in rare scenarios, though certainly not a top national wonder imo.
