I remember a few years ago that I really enjoyed Matrix Games' Tin Soldiers: Alexander the Great. I was wondering if there are any Matrix players who would recommend their other titles?

I loved how much it concentrated on tactics but eschewed the RTS clusterfack.

i am quite partial to Armada 2526.
Space 4x game with turn based galaxy map and stop-'n'-go space battles.

Cool, thanks for the recommendation. I am a little 4Xed out so I am going to beat my copy of Tin Soldiers first, but I will take a look.

I forgot how much I suck at this game. I have absolutely no idea how to order my units *_*

I bought Forge of Freedom a few years ago from Matrix and loved it. I've been eying Advanced Tactics Gold Edition and can't wait for it to come out.

Other than that I haven't tried any of their other games due to my limited budget and Matrix's hefty price on their hardcore wargames.

That tin soldiers game looks pretty awesome. I might have to check that one out. Actually, a bunch of the games on here look pretty awesome.

Tin Soldiers is awesome, and easy to learn, but brutally difficult. And not hard because the computer cheats or has super huge numbers of guys (sometimes I outnumber them), but just because the computer is actually good at coordinating attacks and cutting off yours. You really have to watch the battle field and think several moves ahead. I'm no slouch (nor am I a phenom) at most turn-based strategy games and I got butchered twice before taking the first mission, twice before taking the second mission and I am still getting my ass handed to me by Darius in the third mission. There is a Julius Caesar one I am going to buy next.

Yeah, that sounds great going up against a really good AI that doesn't cheat or anything. I also really like the look they used for the game, using the table top models. I may have to pick it up. I've got such a huge backlog of games. Gog.com is killing me with their weekly sales. I just can't say no to paying $3 or $4 for a good game, but I'll probably never even get around to playing most of them.

Yeah, I used to have that problem, too. My solution was to put aside a weekend a month to be 'game weekend'. No distractions, no other people unless they're playing, too. Just sit down and spend a good 20 or so hours a whole weekend grinding through a game. That sort of concentrated play can really up your skills, too. Playing it piecemeal means you just don't have that intense drilled practice.

I got the idea from an uncle of mine. He works 60hrs a week, has wife and kids, etc. But one weekend a month he sits in his office and picks out a game to beat on the hardest setting.
