What Are You Listening To (Classical Version)?

Edvard Grieg's Norwegian Dances. We are playing them in an orchestra concert, so I decided to hear how professionals play it. The second one is very catchy.

Halvorsen's First will always remain my favourite of his. There's something about the third movement which actually REALLY reminds me of Melartin's suites. His later symphonies are excellent as well, but the first just stands out (and is firmly entrenched in my favourites playlist)

Interesting. I am mostly familiar with Melartin's fine symphonies, of which nr. 5 is my favourite. Will check this out.
In the meantime, here is Halvorsen's 2nd - "Fatum".

Also his orchestration of La Melancholie, a composition of the famous violin virtuoso and larger than life character Ole Bull.

Melartin's symphonies, violin concerto, and his orchestral suites are all marvelous treasures to me. I only discovered his non-violin concerto works last year, and was furious at myself for having missed out on such incredible music for so long. Here are a few links to good performances of the symphonies, by the by the by. The by.

My friend, I could make a whole catalogue of composers and compositions I discoverd too late. But such is life, I am happy anyway that I got the opportunity to make all those discoveries.
Now I will complete my Halvorseniade with his 3rd symphony

And finally his greatest hit, the one "every" Norwegian knows, the Entry of the Boyars

Been listening to a lot of La Coka Nostra lately, really like this song in particular. Does anybody else listen to them, or have even heard of them? They don't seem very popular, but I'm not sure why...

Nordraak was very talenteed, but as you mentioned never really got started. At least he will live on as the composer of the melody to the Norwegian national anthem as well as that Purpose you posted.
@nc-1701, it seems to me that except for having posted a link to a video that does not exist, you are in the wrong thread.
Some more Svendsen. The violin concerto, the famous violin romance here in the orchestral version and finally the Festival Polonaise

Disregard that, I'm a moron. I didn't notice the second movement. Rontgen's Concerto is fairly normal length.

One of the few Schoenberg pieces I actively enjoy and actually have studied in great depth.

This one is particularly good because many modern conductors tend to take the final 30 bars nauseatingly slowly. It loses all it's light, airy charm when that is the case.
