What version of Civ 2 do you use to play GotM games? I was haing problems getting the MGE patch from the downloads section working properly. So, I wondered if I should just stick to vanilla or play with the FW patch from the same page.

I'm using the Test of Time version that came with the chronicles of civilization box set.

I like the Gold edition, but, for Gotms, I use Classic. Classic has a much more friendly AI! Actually, I use both versions, I start in Classic and when the AI starts getting nasty, I switch to Gold. Mainly because Gold has a few more bells and whistles, for example, the find city menu in Gold has the cities alphabetized. Also, in Gold you can cycle through all your cities from any city screen, but in Classic, that feature is not reliable.

And FW is combination of the two, it has the "kinder, gentler" AI and the extra features from Gold. In gotms, any version but Gold is good to start because Gold precludes "begging" successfully from the AI, and from forming alliances with same.

Well, after all the trouble I went through to get MGE working properly, I may just use it anyway - despite the hostile AI. I too noticed experimenting while cheating that even the most receptive civs become hostile after a low number of turns. Even my "ally" quickly slips to uncooperative. I have better relations with the civs I have no contact with.

Ah well, I usually play a pretty isolationist game, after eliminating all nearby competition that is ;) . It probably won't get me the highest score in a GotM, but it's hard for me to remember all the little tricks to play also.
