What Difficulty level will you start at?

I played Civ II on deity so when I got Civ III I decided to try monarch first. I got kicked very badly. So the next game I tried regent. I may not have as bad, but I didn't get close. And this went all the way to the moment I decided to play Chieftain. There I could beat the AI easily (in Civ III the difficulty difference between Chieftain and Warlord is huge). So I guess I'll start at the bottom of the line this time and lose the game, when I at least understand why I'm losing.

Thanks..I just hope not a lot of bugs

Basiclly, I don't thaink the civ4 is much difference from the previous 3. Plus,
I don't AI will be much better than previous ones. So head up with a smae start as AI, might be a do-able task.. :)

Will be interesting to see how you get on sekong :goodjob:

The 1st CIV3 I played was on regent(I think it was the GOTM1). I was doing OK again AI. But the corruption was terrible...

I'm such a wuss I think I will start at the lowest level until I find my way around. I might manage a game at the third level up (in CivIII terms) eventually.

I know my limits and don't enjoy the game being too hard - there's no fun in a game where the AI gets streets ahead of you, despite your best efforts, then crushes you like a fly. I like a fighting chance!
My idea exactly. I hope to be good enough to beat the AI on equal terms. It'll make me feel good to have my 10 Hz brain beat the GHz monster! I've given up long ago to try that in chess.

I wonder if it'll become harder to beat the AI on equal terms now that micromanaging apparently is not so important anymore to get an edge.

I will play on chieftain and stay at that level (hope to build all wonder), once i won in every possible manner, then move up, win every manner, move up, etc....

I'll probably start at the equivalent to Regent so there won't be all the bad habit forming as there is with starting on the lowest levels in CivIII. I would rather get my but kicked straight out instead of messing around on the lowest levels and then moving up and getting my butt kicked later.

I remember getting my head handed to me on my first Chieftain game of Civ III, so I'll probably do Chieftain in IV and expect to survive thanks to the mighty fine folks here at CFC and their wondrous advice :)

Whatever is the setting where the A.I and human are equal in terms of A.I cheating. (or as equal as possible).

Regent, or whatever its called now.

Same for me - Regent sounds about right to start at.

In C3C, I ended up always winning on Emperor, often winning on DemiGod, and ONCE, in my very final game (COTM13), finally winning on Deity.

After reading the manual and playing the tutorial, I'm going to try the equivalent of an emperor-demigod game (C3C difficulty levels). But I'm going to play careful and try to think about the effects of my choices. No fast first game for me, but a challenging competition with the AI's which I'll have to try hard to win.

Probably start with the tutorial and work my way up through the ranks. I'll probably play a low level hotseat game with my cousin. His PC has no hope of running CivIII nevermind IV.

King or Emperor might be my bet

The same here. The problem with starting from an easier level that you might pick up some bad habits that you don't even aware of. It would be painful later on to relearn the gameplay. I don't mind a slow start as that's the norm for an emperor level civ builder.

Anyone who thinks they can leap right into an Emperor game of Civ4 may be in for a few surprises. Many of the basic rules of the Civilization series have been reworked for this game, and Soren's had over two years now to work on that AI... :D

Probably will start out at the one that give no bonusses to anyone. Think that's the Noble dificulty level. I like fair games and you can really see how good the AI is there.

It might be hard with all the new stuff that's in, but that makes it only more fun imo

Wow, ummm... i happen to see some destined for a pwning. true real pwning. i wish i could see that. hehe. im starting on...well idk. prob where were equall. depending on my mood though, i might be on chieftain. i dont care if i get pwned though. pretty humiliating being pwned by an AI. i dont care. I dont want to cheat! I DESPISE CHEATING! i want to get used to the gameplay, but on the other hand...I LOVE NAVAL BATTLES and AIs didnt used to build a navy at all on easy. naval stratagy is the hardest and my best! i hate how my ships ALWAYS loose though. w/e looking back this is a really long post. lol. im gonna shut it now.

Much improved AI will be a big surprise.. Emperor could be difficult. But King should be do-able... I liked the style of one big super city. And I would be good at taking short cut on the tech tree. :)

I'll start with the tutorial and might even read the manual (but then, it could be too big and me to impatient to read it all before playing).

Then I'll probably restart repeatedly as I learn the game. It could be a few days before I ever finish a game.

Chieftain for me :D...the AI will quiver in fear as my tanks roll over their spearmen...at least they'd better. I don't want any more of those spearmen beat tanks stuff that happens in civ3 all too often for my liking. :crazyeye:

I will play at the most fair setting to get a feel for where I should be playing.
You're not playtesting?
