What do u do when u first start?

Build more cities. The first priority is to expand your civilization. The goal is to expand to fill in all available land, than explore to find more.

Tip#1: Read as many threads here at CFC as you can stand.

Tip #2: Do the Tutorial.

Tip #3: Try playing the Tutorial game on your own.

Build cities, with the cipital in the center. Connect the cities with roads and build some more.

In the top right-hand corner of this page is a pull-down menu, "CivFanatics Quick Links". Pull it down to the CIV II section and War Academy. War Academy articles cover topics ranging from starting a game to managing an empire. Read as much as you need now and return to it as new problems crop up.

There is a similar source of information at the Apolyton Civilization Site.

This may be counterproductive so please comment, but given a spacious land mass I run to the perimeter first. Since barbarians don't show up in "settled" areas and foreigners can't march past zones of control, the remaining interior space can be developed more easily once surrounded. It is, however, a slower start because your settlers have to march further.

1. You are losing time. In a tough game time is crucial.
2. I cannot think of too many starts I have had in the middle of a large landmass. Perhaps I am biasing it toward smaller islands, but I would wonder if the civ-placing algorithm tries to start you near the ocean.
3. The capital, by default the first city placed, should be in the MIDDLE of your later cities. If you start in the middle of someplace, find a couple special terrains and place your first city, then build outward in concentric rings. Barbs don't show up at the beginning of the game anyway (16 turns?), and other civs tend to build their empire before exploring too, so this should work.
4. Do aim to place several cities along the coastline, but make sure they are protected. Other civs can drop off diplomats to steal techs right into your coastal cities.

I sort of follow mardukes in sending some settlers out to some perimeter locations (esp choke points or resources / specials) whilst concentrating on the core cities.

I'll also use units (warriors esp as they are cheap) to block access points to prevent the AI settling the areas I want - then its build cities / explore then once I've grabbed enough land concentrate on city improvments / wonders and units whilst building roads / mines / irrigation then railroad etc.

YES! Find that single square that chokes an isthsmus. If it turns out to be a geographically and geometrically desirable location for a city you get your panama canal as well as keeping settler's from the AI from roaming in while your filling in. The value of popping friendly bands of mercenaries!

Expand, defend each city with 1/2 phalanx, build more settlers, build some extra cities and then some improvements/wonders =)

i usually build horseman or other two move things to scout. There is not much point building a huge navy later if your on a landmass. Also scouts can find more productive sites for cities

Put up the following signs:
"Welcome Barbarians!'
"Undefended cities next exit"
"Diplomatic welcome center"

In other words, I LIKE barbarians (they taste like chicken). Bribe them and use them. You may have to rehome them if they keep coming from the same direction.
