What do you do with obselete unique units?

Honor Guard. (provided that they can't be upgraded) Actually, if they can't be upgraded, I use them for happiness garrison in my inner cities (i.e., it's the industrial era, and I'm still in monarchy -- or Communism in C3C 1.15, which I haven't tried in full, yet).

and for killing stragglers

I always have them gaurd my Palace. When they are really obsolite, I send them to the front lines (mmmm samurai vs MA I win )

Usually upgrade, depends on the unit however. Some of the UU won't ever get built by me.

Upgrade, normally.

Unupgradeables, like Sipahi, are used on the front as long as they are any use at all (till I've got Modern Armour, in the case of Sipahi), and if anything's left after that they usually end up being disbanded.

Have been known to use a single one as a Honour Guard in the capital, that's just that one unit, so it has minimal impact on the game at large.

Upgrade if possible.

If not I line my border with them (and cavalry) then make an ROP with my neighbor. I can go through their teritory but they can't enter mine.

I always upgrade all my units which proves very costly, but helpful.

I try to keep at least 3 of each obsolete unit around (most often elite swordsman, knights, or cavalry,) and put them into armies as as special unit like the "Palace Guard" or the "Royal Legions" or something like that. I keep one of each ship around too so my empire can have a "Naval Museum."

Not all UU'sa are good for attacking.. when I play Aztec I stockpile a few Jaguar Warriors so I can control when my Golden Age happens, by picking off a Horseman or a Knight who has redlined damage.

Otherwise I upgrade, upgrade... when a unit becomes obselete and has finished it's upgrade path, I use them to simply quell resisters in catured cities... and pick off some opposition units (cavalry are great for this). I wouldn't generally disband any unit with an upgrade path (except swordsmen... sucky!! upgrade path only into the iron age)

I never thought of havin a honor gaurd, but I usually do save the unit who triggerd my GA, because it's usually what makes my emiper great... and why reward somone who made you number one with death? lol I guess it is a honor gaurd cause usually he ends up in the capitol... go figure.
