What do you play for?

I recently started to play Moo2 again. I tend to pick it up again at some time each decade :).. Looking online I see people seem to be playing for different stuff.

I guess most people start of trying to win at the various difficulties, until they beat impossible with fairly good odds. But where do you go from there?

- I see some people playing blitz to finish fastest in real time. Sounds incredible boring to me. There's a reason I prefer turn based games.

- Some try to max score. This sadly seems a bit silly with so many tedious workarounds to get score, like recapturing aliens over and over and rebuilding your planets to increase their sizes to get max population. Getting through impossible without using race points to get maximum point multiplier seems challenging though. Maybe the best game mod would just be something that generated a good score, which people could be competative gunning for.

- Some seem to play to finish in the least amount of game turns. This sounds a bit interesting, but it also sounds like you'll be loading/saving often due to having to take big risks to finish early, and random stuff like where you start, what leaders you get early, what opponents do you have and where they are, makes a lot of difference to how early you can win.

- Or one can try to gimp oneself in order to up the challenge. Use less race points. Use built in races. Use strategic combat etc.

Personally I'm trying to get through impossible with a -10 race. Seems a bit difficult. First try I manage to capture Sakkra that was close to get better colonists and get away from lowg and -food penalties. I managed to progress beyond the other 3 neighbouring AIs by almost taking out the Sakkra, but way before I was ready, Silicoid came with 40 battleships and laid waste to my land. Planning to retry.

I consider 'blitz' to be finishing in the least amount of turns. Fastest in real time is Speedrun. Having said that, I really like the blitz. I have played many games maxing out on economy and creating an all-Gaia galaxy, but for me the fun wears out and blitz always stays challenging, to be able to shave off one more turn. Usually I do not use save/load. Tactical error made is just game over. When I blitz for minimum turns, the time spent per turn actually goes up :)

edit: Think the way you are playing now, with underpowered race, can give some interesting games too.

Another way to play is to figure out which race you need / which strategy to finish researching the full tech tree in the least amount of turns ..

I play for the enjoyment of the game and the challenge. I'd probably not play much anymore if ICEMOD hadn't come along to make a much better game vs AI's.

Speed run never interested me. My style was never a superfast blitz.

Some ways to make the game more intredasting:

-Do not use specials in your ships (maybe only reinforced hull/armor)
-Play without Orion, do not capture Antarans ships (no early death rays/Xentronium).
-Give away all your researchs, you will always be the weakest on tech and still win.
-Do not make fleets, try to conquest each planet with only a single high tech ship
(can only work on late game).
-My favorite: only the home system, do not make colonies,
do not capture enemy systems, your homeworld against the galaxy! (not always
possible, depend on starting conditions)
-I also play without combat at all, only defending ships. (pacifist, council win)
-You may want to develop your empire without conquests, and then vote for another
race, then refuse the rule (all against you, late game big fight)
-Try to win using only one kind of attack (missiles/beams/fighters/capture)
late game fighters or missiles only are tough and require good engines...
-Try to win with the smallest kind of ships possible (Cruiser only, Destroyers only,
Frigate only, I still have to win with the last one...)
-I give unique names to each of my ships, and I try to not lose any.
-I have won a couple games (and lose many) without researching any tech other
than freighter/colony ships/standard fuel cell (steal only game)
-Play with -50% growth and never use housing, do not build cloning, do not research
microbiotics, universal antidote etc...
-Try to win without using an entire research field (only the first chemistry and the first
2 from power are really needed for colony ships and fuel cells).
Is possible to win without computers or construction if you play a blitz game,
but is fun to play without both physics and power (slow ships, gauss and missiles only,
few command points and no scanning)!
-Never tried this but: research robots workers, replace all your population
with robots only (you can still make spies).

And off course: use a mod.
Rocco's ICE (strongest AI races, no weak races, best AI ship design)
or
Overlord2's VDC (fast and furious, with super upped Antarans)
