It's a fine game, but it contains too many bugs

With a few user modifications, we might have a solid game here. Still, it's kinda sad that it couldn't stand on its own. I'm not writing it off entirely, but I'd really like to know more about the creation of this game, exactly why certain things (the things we gripers have been going on about all day) are the way they are, and what Sid and co. honestly think about the quality of the game that bears their names.

It's a very mixed bag so far, but, considering that this is Sid, that's especially disappointing. I'm still hoping that I can find a nice balance in my own modifications.

Clunky. The interface/menu system took a significant step backwards. I'm having nightmares about icons.

Unresponsive. Push button, wait, unit moves. This also goes for opening many menus. Condition multiplied by ever increasing late-game lag.

Excellent potential. The groundwork for the game is great, religion, health, happiness, combat, and what appears to be a decent ai, etc.

My first impression form the gameplay: excellent :goodjob:

Cities: More special resources, more tile improvement: it requires more strategy to develop the tiles and you have to research most of the improvements. Expansion is harder at the beginning (also for the computer!) which means the cities will be on more optimal spots and further away. Positive for me.

Tech: Feels much more fluid and broader than in civ3, will take some time to get the optimal order, or maybe there is no optimal order with every situation/ strategy requiring you adjusting the research order. :wow:

Military: More units to build available at a time because of all the different promotion trees/ special abilities. Maybe slightly less units/ city.

Culture/ Religion: good enhancement, spread my founded religion, pushed culture and - cities flipped to my empire. :D

Civics: Now you have a real choice :wow:

Overall: more possibilities for gameplay. Less settling frenzy at the beginning, in my current game city spots got filled up at around 1000AD. Pace: Played 3 hours on this game (1 below noble, I think it is called warlord/ standard size), I am 1300AD with my newest Units being muskets and knights. My 2 neighbours are techwise behind. I have 11 cities which already feels like a real empire here.
There is more Information on the screen available (I play at 1280x1024) and it doesn´t feel overloaded.

Negative: Advisors and Civilopedia

I'm someone who wasn't a really big fan of Civ III. It was just too bogged down for my liking. However, I absolutely love IV. Already having put over 12 hours into the game since yesterday, I couldn't be more happy.

Hate to come off sounding like a fanboy of any sort, but the game is a 10 for me.

some minors deducted 0.5 from my 10...

Some stuff will be done with patch 1.1 and after that it's a 10! :)

I'm having a great time and a "one more turn" experience again!

Oh my god, this game is so awesome. I wish it were female so I could marry it. It pwns that much. Time to play some more.

I give it 9/10, it need some fixes and add ons. then it will be a 10/10.
Like beeing able to explore the south and north pole. A must in an expansion. (no changes to the map, just that if you reach north/south pole with a explorer on a ship, you should be able to see the entire north/south map "border" (if you try to move the explorer onto the pole).

So far, I like it. I do agree that the interface seems a bit clunky and the icons can get a little annoying, but I'll get used to that.

My biggest problem so far is the tech tree doesn't really seem to flow very well. I keep bypassing techs for some reason. In past Civs, the tech tree was straight forward. To get a tech, you research any required techs that have the arrows pointing to the desired tech. In Civ4, researching previous techs doesn't seem to have much bearing on research. I'm sure this is something that I'll figure out in the long run.

One feature that I really like the look of is the new engine for detirmining forign civs friendlyness toward your civ. It really makes trading luxuries a fairly important deal now. Long lasting friendships and trade routes strengthin the relationship between your civs. Gone are the annoyences of CivIII where, as soon as you can sign Mutual Defence Pacts, every nation on the maps signs a new pact with someone else every 10 turns.

Agree. The interface is by FAR the worst part of the game. Nothing intuitive or simple about it. Not like Civ3 where you could get lists of all units or all cities at the click of a button. In Civ 4 it is a major effort to even figure out what improvements a city has, much less what you have for military units and where they are.

IMO this could have been a LOT better if they had not gone nuts with icon freaks.

I noticed that also. The tree seems to be... weird..

You can research techs that should be FAR out of reach for you in some cases, even skipping ones that it seems should be part of the tree.

The tech-tree is one of the parts I enjoyed the most from the very start! :D You "skip" so many techs because it's so flexible and you choose what to research based on the goals to accomplish of your current situation! This makes the tree very vital, IMHO...
I'm very sure you won't get into an "everygame-habit" with this tech-tree like e.g. the republic-slingshot from civ3...

Uhmn.. don't you think it is a bit odd to be researching nuclear power, when you don't even have the wheel yet?

it might turn out to be a great game, but i may never know. already, my frustration level with the bugs has totally soured me on the game. it should've been ready out of the box. since it wasn't, i'm sure i could've have much more enjoyment from a game that only rated 8.8/10. those extra tenths of a point aren't worth the hassles i (and others) have had to endure.
