For me all countries, barbarian tribes, nations etc. that have been created before the fall of rome are civilizations. For example the amercans, why are the americans a Civ? They are a mix of europeans, Africans and Native Americans. And the Englsh... They are a part of the Britons and Anglo-Saxons. The Russians are a part of the Sllavs etc. All those nations for me they are only nations and not civs...

Well the Romans and Greeks didn't spring forth fully formed from the ground, you know, they were also descended from earlier barbarian invaders.

As for civilization (or civillsation), it means living in cities, from the Latin word for citizen - civis.

I define 'civilization' as a country/empire that significantly influenced their "known world". The influence could be technoloically, religiously, militarily, politically, etc.

One definition of civilization that probably applies to Civ 3's Tribes...

The type of culture and society developed by a particular nation or region or in a particular epoch

The word has several definitions, some narrower, some broader.
