I notice that most military untis have a 'sentry' command which I have never used.

What does this do ? It isn't in the civilopedia (and wasn't in the PTW or vanilla civilopedias either as far as I can remember )

Thanks

I often have one of my garrison units in cities sentried to let me know if I missed some sort of sneak attack of the AI dropping a unit in some distant location. Also, sentry for ships gets you the extra visibility square as well - will also wake when another ship passes in the night.

How do you know this :)

It would be nice if it had been put in the Civilopedia. I can understand it being missed once (for Civ 3 Vanilla) , but for it to be missed three times ( PTW & conquests in addition to Civ3) seems a bit much seeing as it seems to be an option which is available to all combat units!

Wait- I'm confused. Doesn't a fortified unit wake up if an enemy or barbarian passes? What benefits does Sentry have?

the 'sentry' command was added in the v.1.17f patch for vanilla civ3.

DOES the sentry give the defensive bonus if attacked? I dont think so...

Does this all mean that the SENTRY ENEMY ONLY option only wakes a unit if a nation your CURRENTLY at war with sends a unit that ways? How far away does the unit have to be from your own to wake it? 1 or 2 units?

Hm, I think it will wake your unit whenever it spots ANY unit from a nation with which you don't have a Right of Passage or a Military Alliance, but I may be wrong.

I think that this depends on the vision range of the unit. Units on sentry over a mountain, for instance, can see more than the ones in a grassland or a forest.

I'm not positive, but I think I read over at Apolyton that it does give the fortify defensive bonus.

Also note the SHIFT-Y command only wakes up your sentried unit if an enemy unit passes by - but this doesn't seem to work in C3C anymore (worked in PTW), since the unit just stays asleep when an enemy goes by.
