What else to listen to while playing SMAC/SMAX ?

I think music is a downside in SMAC and SMAX. I wonder what I could be listening to without disrupting the integrity of the experience.

The music stops from time to time in the game right, so playing music from a different application may not be the best thing if it can be possible to make the game play/stop the music you want to play.

Any suggestions ?

Do you want to modify the in-game sound files to be more to your liking? If so, the sound files can be found in the folder fx (there are hundreds of them). Perhaps a more practical solution would be to disable the in-game sound and then play your preferred music from some other source. To disable the sound, rename the files sound.dll and soundx.dll in the main SMACX folder.

Wouldn't just replacing the thing you want to change with the thing you want to play using the same file name and type work ?

Opening menu.wav is what's played on the menu but I couldn't find the in game music file. I also don't know which music to use while playing the game.

I think I can try the music from Civilization: Beyond Earth for now but I must find that music too.

Though it may be better to find good music that I won't listen to while playing another game, so they won't lessen the effect of one another or get mixed up.

Yes, you can replace the .wav files with others that you like, but there are more than 300 of them. If you decide to replace the .wav files, try just one at first to make sure there aren't any compatibility issues.

I have an Opening menu.wav file in my fx folder. Is that what you're looking for?
Only you can decide what music to play in lieu of the standard music. If anyone has any suggestions, please chime in.

There are 366 files but they are very short, maybe about half of them is only 1 second long. I'm not interested in replacing sound effects and voices, I only want to replace the in game music, the file that plays when music is clicked on in the game and though I played the files on vlc player I couldn't find that file, I think I need to try again after playing the game for some time to memorize the music better.

Sounds and music are way out of my comfort zone. I searched, but couldn't find anyone who had modified the in-game music. Sorry that I couldn't be of help.

That's ok. I can still play sth on a music player or browser. Thanks for trying.

Hey guys I just signed up here to reply to this because a week ago I found the ultimate alpha centauri soundtrack, aphex twin's selected ambient works volume 2. I can't recommend enough to any fan of the game to turn the IG music off and try that CD once while playing

In preparation for Bladerunner 2049 I've been listening to some old Vangelis, and I think some of that music fits the SMACX theme quite nicely, specifically his work for Carl Sagan's "Cosmos", as well as the "Albedo 0.39" album.
