What Firaxis is Teaching Us

I'd say the only thing that would get me pissed off these days, as far as games are concerned, are bugs the result of a game developer attempting to "optimize" (aka cutting features) to get the game running on obsolete computers.

So why is the game still SLOW on 1.2 ghz PC's??

Answer: Firaxis design and development inadequacies.

I'm flying a dell 4100 (1.2 ghz) and it's doing fine. I don't like playing on ha-yuge maps... If that's whatcha mean. (I DO hope they find a way to speed it along a bit, HOWEVER< you can choose whether or not to see all opponent moves, and that will make it go appreciably faster.)

my humble $0.02

""Don't buy the game when it comes out. Don't even buy it when the expansion pack comes out. Wait until they have a combo pack a year after the fact.

I'm sorry guys, but Firaxis should have put every bit of this in Civ3.

When Civ4 comes out, I'm not getting it unless I play a demo and like it, or get good word of mouth.""

No. Buy both. I'm always willing to support gaming companies that come out with games like Civ3. The more money they make, the more likely other games of similar caliber will be made. Considering 95% of Computer games that come out today are shoot em up real time crap. Your damn right I'll support Firaxis!

I was having a really bad day when I posted that. However I don't think it's unreasonable to expect that a NEW game should have the best features of the OLD game. Know what I mean? I bought it under the impression that it was going to have all the old stuff with new stuff. I liked it, but was disappointed by the fact that I couldn't use the world map, and start out at the assigned place.

It is not too unreasonable. However, you also have to make sure that you compare apples to apples. A compiled editon of the game and all of its add ons is not a fair comparison to the sequal. Otherwise the sequel could never have an add-on unless the developers can think of something totally new.

Also along the same lines, design changes to the game are not necessarily the dropping of features to sell them to you later. Instead the adding of them is the developers listening to their fans and realizing their thoughts of the changes were not equally held.

Well said, friend. However, I disagree that listening to their fans was the initial motive. I think they had a plan to make the most $$$ they could (which is business)but I wanted to make my dissatisfaction known just the same, so that they would consider feelings like mine in the future. I feel toyed with, and a bit manipulated. Not all-out betrayed, but... Manipulated. (Like when you buy oil from someone so that you can wage war with someone else in the game.)

I was simply a bull grazing in the grass, when I suddenly realized... "Hey! I'm eating GRASS!"
