Could anyone name games that are similar to Civ III other that Sid's games? Thnx in advance.

Call to Power (CtP) and Alpha Centauri (SMAC) are the two most-similar games to Civ.

What parts of civ 3 did you mean? I feel that EU and EU2 are similiar to civ in important ways but disimiliar in others.
Similiar:
Games take a long time to complete - no 1 hour games.
You research technologies (not completely like Civ in this respect as the reach is much more simplified but I think better overall).
You take over countries and like in Civ3 it keeps progressively hard to control them as you get away from your empire center.
Culture plays an important part of the game when conquering other lands.
Adictibility - I am constantly saying just one more year! I have to get my alliances in order so I can start attacking. :)
Disimiliar:
Real-time - but can be paused...feels better IMHO.
Research - Much easier - you can research Land, Navy, Infrastructure, Merchantism, or send the money directly to your coffers...but watch out for inflation!
Time span - The game only covers about 400 years of history, not the 5k like in Civ.

If you haven't tried this game I would suggest you do so - you can get it for cheap on Ebay: http://search.ebay.com/europa-universalis_W0QQsokeywordredirectZ1QQfromZR8

Rise of Nations should be a similar sort of game and theres always Rome Total war which will be out soon and will hopefully be a decent game with improved diplomacy. Its turn based although te playable period will be significantly shorter than Civ but the time period in EU and EU2 is also shorter.

Galactic Civilizations, as the name suggests, is similar to Civ., but has you building a futuristic space empire, as does Master of Orion, although the latter is a little old now and the most recent version MOO 3 was not very highly regarded.

Spartan is an empire building game set in ancient Greece.

If your tastes extend to fantasy the venerable Masters of Magic is very good and shares quite a few ideas with Civ, such as building settlers to found new towns, researching magic, instead of technology etc. and runs fine in DOSbox. Dominions 2 is also a good fantasy empire builder (the graphics are pretty dated though), but has no diplomacy in single player, so you'll have to go multiplayer, if this is important to you.

Others have mentioned EU and EU2, which are real time rather turn based, but aren't the typical RTS clickfest.

Edit to fix typos and add: Paradox have also recently released Crusader Kings, which appears to be EU for Medieval Europe and looks like it might be interesting.
