I've been playing Civ 6 since the day of release (and the series since Civ 1) - and moved difficulty up to Emperor almost a year ago. Like many have said, it was a challenge but I got to where I could reliably win, sometimes barely, other times I could do well. Point is, I liked the challenge. I liked getting better.
The last two updates have really made my life in Civ miserable though. I play on Linux and the update before the most recent one took a stable game and made it crash city. Want to reload and try something differently? Good luck with that. I might work after 5 tries, or maybe not.
The most recent update however, has made the game just about unplayable for me - at least on Emperor. I've finished only one game since then. All of the others have been failures.
Some of the things I am struggling with - usually play for Culture wins:
1. Barbarians are as tough or tougher than full civs to combat. They are always hiding in the fog of war of and ambushing my units. I used to be able to go through entire games and seldom lose a unit. No longer.
2. My Units take more damage than I ever remember taking before. They are 1/2 dead after one fight when the tech is even, and yes I know what units don't match up well.
3. These barbarians hordes make expanding beyond 4-5 cities very difficult even when there is lots of land available. I recently had to use 7 (!!!) units to take one camp that was making me miserable. Used to be easy to do with 2 or maybe 3.
4. Without expansion, catching up to the AI civs is impossible. Building units means I'm not building up cities.
5. AI civs see me sending all my units to fight barbs and see an opportunity to attack.
6. By the Renaissance I have little territory, no gunpowder, a weak army - never better than middle of the pack - and I am facing AI cavalry.
7. Science and culture are usually good, in first or second place in both.
8. Barb camps almost seem to spawn units just because you looked at them. IE. got close enough to lift fog.
9. I need to guard a builder to work a sea tile? wft, like I don't enough on my plate...
10. Did I mention money is always tight? It's tough to buy or upgrade units.
11. Like the "spawn when seen" and "swoop in an snatch builder at sea right next to the capital", the AI seemingly starts to build a settler when it sees you building one. It "has to have" territory it never showed any interest in and which has no special resource. Just a place I could desperately dump a settler because I need districts and pop. These 3 habits are real fun killers.
Things that I know I need to better at:
1. Upgrade walls beyond ancient. Never had to do that before, sure seems to be a thing now.
2. Built Encampments. Never did a lot of that either.
3. Build more builders.
I don't think these alone are going to be enough to get me where I want to be. I have not turned the difficulty down because the idea makes me quite frustrated. I worked hard to get where I was and I want to know what I am missing. II looked at the release notes a few times and nothing leaped out at me. I don't see other people having these issues, except maybe with barbs.
What am I missing? What has the recent update made you do differently?
