What is REX? I see it mentioned a lot, but I don't know what it means.

Rex is the name of my dog. Seriously,

REX : Rapid expansion.

@KevinMiles : lol

It's the civ5 opposite of SEX...seriously though that could be a good reason to bring up a thread of common used abreviations through the forums, I recall not knowing what OCC refered to the first 2 hours I was reading those forums...which is like supposed to be one of the easiest civ5 term to get used to

o and Rapid expansion or rapid expanding (although ppl often use REXing in the later case) as others pointed.

Moderator Action: This thread can either continue as a discussion of REXing, or of the definition of REX, or it can be locked as 'question asked, question answered' if it becomes too spammy. Please contribute to the former rather than the latter.

Also, for those interested, here's a link to a list (albeit incomplete and a bit out of date) of abbreviations.

REX can also be applied to more than just early expansion. Often people will say the stopped to build the National College and then REXed. Not really an early expansion.

In a pure REX you want to start getting new cities up as fast as possible without tanking your economy and happness.

When I REX I go build order something like this, Warrior > Worker/Warrior (depends on my Social Policy choices) > Warrior (like to be pop 3 before settlers are built so you can skip this if you are already at 3) > Settler > Settler > ????

I go for the warrior first as with the higher than normal settler production I like to have better fogbusters in place early.

Social Policies go Tradition or Liberty first (personal preference and AIs will determin this) then hit up Liberty. I like to grab the Worker before the Settler.

Tech the worker tchs you need first and then think about where you want to go from there.

I like to get 3/4 cities out before 1000BC.

I've come to realize that in Civ 5 you can do both most of the time. It's led me to redefine REXing for myself.

@grandad it stands more for "Rapid expansion" than early expansion, hence the use of "NC then REX" for example. Aka as soon as your national college is built, you do a rapid expansion.

At least that's how I've always interpreted it.

I guess your right. I think it must have changed some were down the line as when I first encountered it it stood for Rapid Early eXpansion (I think).

I guess I use it much more to suggest just rapid expansion now.

Yeah, IIRC REX used to stand for rapid early expansion when playing civ3. Build 4 settlers, found cities, each new city builds 3-4 settlers, etc. Something like that. It was all about getting as many cities up & running as fast as you possibly could. There wasn't much value in founding new cities after the first land grab (unlike civ5).

Interesting...I never played civ3 really

The WW2 Eastern front mod (and the american civil war mod) were some of the best things for Civ ever made. Even with the ridiculous army feature.

(armies in civ 3 were basically super units that you combined 3-4 units into one with super HP by using a great general) The problem being that the AI didn't know how to use them properly.

Rex is also latin for king. :king: The rulers of ancient Rome, pre-republic, had the title Rex. Some English monarchs in the modern age used Rex Imperator, or King and Emperor.

I still think of that every time I see the term.
