I have Civ2 TOT & I just used the patch to up/downgrade it to MGE.

Tot looked a lot better, should I just reinstall TOT? Im not interesed in scenarios. I'd like to find a HUGE map of earth. A map where I cam build at least 3-4 cities on the british isles ( WITHOUT OVRELAPPING TILES) would be good, so which version is best ?

THanks.

It's a matter of opinion.

TOT is the newest with the newest graphics and ideas, but more people have MGE. And most scenarios, maps, and multiplayer's are playing MGE.

Conculsion: If eye-candy is your thing and your not going to play scenarios or with others, and you like the other playing options then reinstall TOT. But if you want to be "compatible" with most other things in the Civ world then stay with MGE. Based on what you have said....I would reinstall TOT and forget the rest.....at least until Civ 3 comes out.

I think we know Slowwhand's opinion.

I also prefer MGE over TOT. I didn't like the animation....but I only played it once....so....

I have a TOT as well with the MGE conversion. I received a patch a few months ago which changes the MGE graphics to look more like TOT. Give me your e-mail address or ICQ and I will send it to you.

I think ToT is the best, especially if you´re not doing any multiplaying or scenarios (like me). But why not get both? Install ToT, copy the entire directory to a new place, apply the patch to that, and voila, you have MGE and ToT.

Have a look at this site for that world map: http://ostranderbellepoint.tripod.com/index.htm
I think it´s pretty much one of the largest possible world maps around. You really can´t get much larger than that. I think you can only get two or maybe three cities on the British Isles without overlap though.

FW is superior to MGE in that 3-point objectives work, GoTo works, and the AI is almost reasonable in diplomacy.

Multiplayer Gold *KILLS* Test of Time. Test of Time has so much worse graphics and lacks the cool features of the superior Gold. Haven't played the other ones yet.

I prefer MGE however, I think that if you do that conversion you could get the MGE graphics, scenarios, maps and the good things about TOT like the multiple dimensions/worlds/areas. The best of both worlds perhaps?

Also what is FW version?

One of the ones I have!

As I have a copy of all the ones released for the PC it has to be one of those, can't be one of those inferior Mac products

In all seriousness I like MGE better than ToT for multiplayer, as there are more players available. And for single player I like FW the best, in case you get one of those random maps that would be perfect for a scenario then you can save it and do it, unlike w/ ToT plus without that untrusting AI of MGE.

TOT cost me a computer, because when I installed TOT and saw those repugnent graphics, I kept projectile-vomiting all over everything. When I got a new computer, TOT was not allowed.

PS, Just kidding about the vomit & new computer, but the graphics are supremely terrible. Long live MGE, the best computer game ever made (so far)!!

FW is superior to MGE in that 3-point objectives work, GoTo works, and the AI is almost reasonable in diplomacy.

What is a 3-point objective? A military briefing, LOL?

Now a GoTo that works reliably would be a HUGE time saver for me, as I routinely send freight on long rail journies that MGE fouls up all too often.

As long as you play at Deity with a Power Democracy, who cares about Diplomacy? You'll be strong enough for a back-stab at any time, and in fact, you need those back stabs to help get the sympathy of the Hawks

. Not to mention a backstab should cost the AI from one to 10 of it's cities, hehehe...

I have been playing TOT on and off since it came out and I am also not the type that has played it every day for the past decade, but I have played Civ since the very first release all those years ago and I then moved up to Civ II, after a while lost my Civ II CD and got TOT.

I can say this: TOT is in every way better and in no way inferior. I am now actually playing a game on Civ II but, TOT has better everything, and it also does without those damn annoying throne room upgrades (which I didn't even realize were annoying until TOT pointed that out to me).

So, in conclusion, if you are a long time Civaholic who would rather die than admit something new is good then go with CGE. Otherwise, go with TOT and don't look back.

Well, if you're not interested in scenario's, and you like the ToT graphics more (which is a question of taste, offcourse); then the answer isn't difficult. Reinstall ToT.

For me personally MGE is the best edition. I have all editions, 2.42, FW, MGE and ToT. I love to play scenario's so MGE is the ultimate version for me. I found ToT a bit unstable on my PC compared with MGE or FW.

Yeah, I hear ya (although I don't play on deity, I'm discovering what a "Power Democracy" is on king)....

I don't object to the backstabs so much (they're the best excuse there is for war, short of getting the AI to declare it on YOUR turn by demanding they withdraw existant or nonexistant troops from your territory), but I wouldn't mind a more REALISTIC diplomatic experience. Like when I build a more compact civ (to speed the game up some), and actually look forward to real cooperation and mutual benefit from an alliance, which will never come.... I'm excited about CivIII, because it doesn't seem you'll be forced into the "loner" role that you are in CivII once you become supreme.... If he means that the AI in FW is more reasonable in THAT sense, then I might want to give it a shot (although as a rule I don't buy more than one version of the same game, unless it's a major update, like CivIII). Personally, I would like to see a diplomacy that's a bit more flexible, and a bit less predictable than CivII's. Don't you agree? I hope CivIII fits the bill, it seems like it might....

Civ II's diplomacy is 5 years old, but it's not too bad in my book. I admit it would be nice if a civ would be grateful for more than one turn when I gift it the entire tech tree, and they were back on Iron Working or something backwards like that. But one turn later, they are hostile again. Oh well. But I'm sure Civ III will be much better, all the way around... and I'm looking forward to it.
