Pyramids.

This wonder gives a massive amount of flexibility, especially with Spiritual civilisations, as said above. It is extremely powerful throughout the game, and unless used poorly, will be a massive asset to your civilisation.

I like the Pyramids. It's usually the first one I aim for, before choosing Universal Sufferage once I get enough cottages up and running. Saving up Great Engineers over time is a good way to accelerate late game Wonders like the Three Gorges Dam towards the end of the game, something I find useful in tight space races.

Piramids are way too expensive to get. Usually I am chopping down swordmen to take over my first rival so I cannot afford building the piramids at that time. I prefer to steal them from the rival, same as stonehegde. :smug:

I would go to the oracle since it does nothing if you conquer the city where its built, and choose metal casting, (waiting for civil service is way too risky in higher levels) Then you can build forges, which gives you extra hammers to make more swordmen to take over the second rival, hopefully before the game starts counting AC years and start building the colossus and pop up great merchants.

I am not sure that the oracle gets my vote for best, but I rate it highly. My top early game priority is getting code of laws as rapidly as possible. Code of laws is basically the green light to begin sustainable warmongering. For me, the two fastest ways to get COL are either a stonehenge great priest or the oracle. Though I have been divided as of late on which path is best, the oracle is at least #2 on my list. Also....don't overlook the value of getting the oracle to deny the AI a free tech. On higher difficulties, by the time the AI builds the oracle, it already has all of the cheaper techs. So not only do they get a relatively decent tech immediately....they immediately whore it out to all their buddies.

So my vote is for either stonehenge or the oracle.

I'm all about the Stonehenge. I rarely start with Mysticism, so I make a quick run immediately to Polytheism. With the Henge I'll get my shrine right when religious spreading is rampant. Plus, I'll usually get Monothesim/Judaism also => another Great Prophet => another shrine. That plus the early game culture that all cities (including the conquered ones ;)) get.
