It depends. I'd say conquest is easiest on a small map and space ships are easiest on a large map to me.

Conquest is easier. Spaceship is more satisfying.

That's easy enough for me to say: I've never failed to conquer the world when that's what I was trying to do, but I have lost the space race. (of course, that was on a higher level than I'd ever played before...)

For me, the space race. Always. Nothing is more satisfying than seeing 40,000 Zulus arriving at Alpha Centauri! I've always won the space race, except for one time when I had to retire before my ship made it. In one game, it was close because we ALL were fighting to get to Alpha first, but I made it by the skin of my teeth.

I'd go along with that, although I suspect it really depends on your own playing style & strategies.

I usually let the ai start the spaceship first then I trample across his continent, take his capital and make his spaceship crash ..

TWell, they do say that the harder they are the bigger the fall

Conquest (head bashing) = FUN.

Spaceship = more work and planning (in most cases).

Conquest in the post-auto era with Modern Units is the most fun (for me).

On the lower difficulty levels, it's laughably simple to conquer the world, while building a spaceship still requires you to build up a decent industrial base.

On the higher levels, the AIs'll be churning out units at tremendous rates, which makes world conquest quite tough, while you're usually able to win the tech race, thus often giving you a good chance to get to Alpha Centauri first.

its probably easiest to win by SS.Stay small and go isolated perfectionist.10 cities tops, all well developed.
No units all over.No tons of cities to manage.

I used to play bloodlust only. Then I started feeling guilty for all the conquere/death I was propagating. Now I "growthudemocracy" build Women's sufferage, U.N., and Hoover Dam and use my military to respnd to AI attacks and patrol international waterz, choosing to teraform Alpha Cetauri as apposed to decamating earth......

You're never going to get a massive score if you try to win by conquest, but it is very satisfying winning when the civs are reincarnating all over the map - particularly in those little areas on your home island that you haven't settled and would not think of looking in again. I think that there should be a greater reward for winning by conquest, although Mr Meier did intend the game as a diplomatic challenge, rather than a war game. I like both methods, but am extremely sceptical of people who claim to have won OCC by conquest. That you'll never get a conquest high score is sad, but you do need to concentrate far more to win by spaceship, particularly when your empire is enormous and everywhere is building spaceship parts. I always like to use tanks though, and even on a large map, conquest is possible before the discovery of Mobile Warfare so I either hang on and then flatten the opposition or just keep a pet city and perfect my civ.

I don't know if winning OCC by conquest is a common thing, as I haven't seen anyone really talking about it. However, in June, I played Sten Sture's classic "4 Whales" as an OCC conquest, just to see if I could do it.

I figured it would go pretty fast, but in the end it bogged down a little, due to the limitation of producing only one spy per day. My strategy was to use stealth fighters and one carrier at first, and shuttle damaged fighters back for repairs. It became the equivilent of the Vietnam War's "Rolling Thunder". I used hundereds of spies, as the Chinese in particular had some very big cities... and the rules I placed on myself were an extension of OCC... namely, that I could never, ever (even for a moment) possess more than one city. This means all cities had to be reduced and destroyed, and that took some time.

However, I did win it, and it was an interesting game. Near the end, it was not really fun to keep moving dozens of spies to kill the outlying cities, though. Remember, your spies that survive their well poinonings and sabotage must be moved from halfway around the world to continue operation Rolling Thunder.

In the end, I realized that conquest by OCC requires only patience and a slight adjustment in strategy and mindset from a "normal" OCC game. Another that might comment is Smash, who is an avid OCC player. I believe Noughmaster is also playing some OCC, too.
