What is the general multiplayer experience like?

Awesome! That went splendidly. As soon as I finished my post I fired up Steam. And then a thunderstorm got going in Bangkok. And then all the power went out. And then the building's net went down for 12 hours. It's just come back on now. (The lady couldn't be bothered switching the router back on, as is usually the case.)

So on top of all the inherent issues MP has, I have to deal with this sort of crap.

Wish me luck.

I'm going to go on an extra vicious killing spree today so watch out if you're my opponent.

:goodjob:

So I played my 1st CiV MP game with some folks off civplayers.com. Dunno if it's my thing but I'll have another go in the future.

Learnt a lot, including the fact the game ends on turn 80. Handy to know!

It's very very slow. I figured it'd be a quicker pace than SP. The lag made it almost unplayable. Are LAN games affected in the same way?

Anyway, cheers to those I played against.

Well ancient start games are slower, playing MP doesn't change that, Med and later starts are getting more popular because they have faster starts. Yes we have turn limits, though 80 turns is about the shortest we play, going upto around 120 turns.

That is just a fact of life because people doing random lobby games only have 2-4 hours on an average night not play.

As to the lag...well that depends on who you are playing with, all MP games suffer some lag, but I've had quit a few very low lag pleasant games as well. Most players are either in North America or western europe, so if you are outside that area, likely you might have lag to the average MP players you will run into at Civplayers.

I hope you do give it one or two more games though, one game is not really enough to draw any conclusions.

Yeh I'll certainly give it another crack in the future.

I'm in Bangkok and everything, net-wise, lags here.

Ya unfortunately unless you find some other asians/kiwis/aussies to play with you likely are going to always have laggy games.

I have played many LAN games and I will say that they do not lag in anyway more than SP does.

I have always found Civ MP the most fun with friends on a lan. You can play long games over the period of multiple days, you can set rules seperate of the game rules if you like and nothing beats talking smack to someone who is right there.

Totally agree. Civ IV LAN games were the business.

I m just wondering whats the MP like comparing to civ4.
Civ4 everybody complained about gamespy. But now gamespy is gone still everybody complains. LOL
so i was wondering if MP has made progress since civ4 or should i stick wich civ4 and skip civ5?

I just played the civ5demo but its only single player:(. It played a lot like civ4 but the graphics looks bad on my Old PC. On a new PC i guess it looks wonderfull.

In my experience, the ratio of games smoothly played are almost the same. Playing with local server and players help tho. But far to be perfect like it was for civ4 in the beginning.

Always dull when you play almost 2 hours and around 100 turns and suddenly the game crash for any reasons.

Multiplay experience has been horrible. After four weeks, most of of the guys I play with are fed up. Hopefully we will finish the game we started tonight... then vote to return to Civ IV. Civ V has a lot of potential. The lag, especially end game, is bad, real bad. Also I don't have much good to say about Steam. Believe it is making multiplayer worse.
