What do you mean by growth rate?

I tend to remember % rather than score, but my highest has been over 250% on King, I think.

Btw, just noticed that I am a phalanx now. WHOOOPEE!

Yes, the score is relatively meaningless BUT, in order to finish the game early by SS in most cases it helps to have many large cities. You need the pop. base to get high science rates, good trade revenue, and high shield production. So, since the greater part of a high score is population, a high score goes naturally hand in hand with a well-played game IMHO. (Granted it's not *necessary*--OCC games are a case in point.)

As for percentages, I've had 840-something% in Deity and 1200-something% in Emperor without specifically trying to get a high score. I've also reached the 320 mil citizen level twice in a single game.

With over 200 million population I reached a growth rate of 327%. My score was 3278.

I don't remember my score, but one game I tried to get a really high percent. I put the game on deity with a large world. I saved often and reloaded whenever something bad happened.

I think the percent was 1961. I couldn't quite break 2000. I had a city roll over (where it goes back to a low number) after 256 I think. (I used food caravans to get the food high enough). The future technologies also rolled over. The population count increased, although the number that it reported for population rolled over.

I don't often play that way. It's much more fun to keep playing when something goes wrong (like barbarians capture a city or something) That way it's more of a challenge.

One of my first Civ 2 games (deity, std barbs, large, random map, 7 players) I went overboard and decided to max the score, which topped out at 15,500 I think, in 2019 as my spaceship landed. Don't know the percentage. It took a few weeks of playing to finish it, partly becuase I was new to Civ and pretty slow... plus it taught me a lot along the way. It was so boring that I have never tried to get a score that high again.

I remember that along about 1950, after I had pre-planned exactly where all my remaining cities should be constructed, I discovered the 254 (plus one for the Sioux) city limit when I tried to build.. Boy, was I hacked... I could not believe there was such a low limit on # of cities!! I actually had to destroy several cities (building engineers) and go with the 254 best, which put me right up on the 2020 deadline for them to grow. Boy it was frustrating and tedious!

BTW, that was the game in which I discovered the value of trade... before then, I never bothered with trade routes.

My highscore is 335% (41xx points) at King-level, I ended in A.D. 2019 with my spaceship. That record is 1-2 weeks old. Maybe it's time for a new one?

I know it seem hard sometimes, but uh...
remember one thing:
through every dark night,
there's a bright day after that,
so no matter how hard it get, stick ya chest out
keep ya head up and handle it.

Does anyone actaully know the mathematical relationship between the % and the numerical score?

By the way, from the closed thread:

254(255) cities with a population of 126(127) x 2 because they are all happy + 100 points of peace + 400 points for the space ship + 560 for all the wonders + 1250 for all the future techs + 25 for barbarians!

Nice job, but incorrect on two points... first, happy max per city is 20 (not possible to get 21 or more happy people in one city). Second, Future Tech Max is 1275.

This is what happens: it is reported that you discover FT 255, and you select the only option of FT 256 to research. But when you discover what you hoped was FT 256, it will be reported that you in fact discovered FT 0. The FT bonus on your score will drop from 1275 (for FT 255), all the way back to 0. You must then again research yourself back to 255 and stop all science (if you want the max bonus).

This is accurate for Civ II MGE, 5.4.0f, Mar 99.

Ooops, forgot the source of the quote. It was from Shadowdale, posted June 07, 2001 04:31 AM. I wanted to point that out because in your original post you asked "Please tell me if I missed something or made any mistakes calculating the score.....".

The one large map game I played out for score was on the Europe map, which of course conveys the advantage of knowing the geography. Diety, 7civs, minimal barbs (I personally think the AI is more hindered by barbs than a human player anyway, but I find them annoying) - 1642% As for growth rate... I dunno, but once I had subdued the AI, I jacked up the luxuries in my 200+ cities and had "we love" take many of them from size 8 or 12 up into the 20's and 30's. Incidentally, I think that game was on the original Civ II (on a friend's comp). I now play MGE, which has nastier, albeit just as dumb, AI.

sidenote - in terms of numerical score vis-a-vis % score, it depends on difficulty. If memory serves:

Chieftan - 2%
Warlord - 4%
Prince - 6%
King - 8%
Emperor - 10%
Diety - 12%

for example - total score of 1000 on deity would equal 120%
