I see the bombard unit have an ability of collateral damage, but what is it?
Thank you

It means that, when the unit attacks a stack of enemy units, there's a chance it will do some damage to each unit, not just the one it "fights".

When you attack with a collateral damage unit, other enemy units on the same tile take some damge (1/7th of the total strength I think?). There is a max number on units that can take collateral damage, and a maximum damage that can be done.

It is vey powerfull when taking well defended cities. Say the AI has 6 longbows in the capital. If you attack with 1 to 3 catapults before you start with your macemen they will all be significantly damaged. You will lose you catapults, but probably not your macemen.

thank you for your reply, one more question:
the presentage beside collateral damge, does it means the chance to cause collateral damage, or the presentgae of power base on its strength?

Where is the percentage? I have not noticed it. As far as I am aware, the units allways cause collateral damage. It could be the maximum damage that it can do (50% with bombers, these are the only ones I have got to the limit with). Are you sure you are not looking at the bomberd city defences percentage?

when you promote the bombard unit, you would have a choice of the abilities, one of them is barrage ability, it enhace the presentage of collatercal damege 20. So what does it mean?

IIRC, each unit that can cause collateral damage has two percentages: one that defines the strength used to calculate the collateral damage and another defining the maximum amount of damage that can be caused.

Catapults, for instance, have STR=5 and a collateral damage strength of 100%, which again means 5. The max damage they can do via collateral damage is 50% (I think - I'm doing this from memory).

Chu-Ko-Nus have STR=6, collateral damage strength of 50%, meaning 3. Max collateral damage is 60%.

Tanks have STR=28, collateral damage strength of 0%, meaning 0 - no collateral damage by default. I forget the max damage. If you give your Tank Barrage I+II, it will have a collateral damage strength of 50% (20% + 30%), meaning 14. So, yes, Tanks can cause quite a lot of collateral damage, but most of us don't notice because we're too busy giving them City Raider promotions.

Cats and Arty are the bomb for taking out stacks of troops, either in cities or raoming armies. I usually suicide 3-5 siege weapons on a big stack or city to soften them up before attacking with my other high level units.

COLLATERAL DAMAGE RULES

Catapults dont always die when you attack cities! They ahve a chance to retreat, i think its as high as 20%.

I often get catapults surviving, and i often use horse with the flank manouver in attacks on strong enemies, caus they have a high chance to run for cover when losing :D Its depressing when these highly promoted units do get killed though.

I've been known to send stacks made up of 50% cats and trebs. Trebs get 100% city attack so they're essentially 10 strength since that's all I use them for. Just wheel everything up to the city, bombard down to 0 and then whack them with your seige weapons. If you're not using this strategy then you're wasting units. You can take a Civ with half the units you would normally build if you send a bunch of seige weapons with you.

I always have a good number of Tanks with Barrage. Generally, I try to even it out between that and CR.
