What is "Theological Combat?"

I was not expecting that. Interesting...

I wager Spain might be one of the Civs with two unique units... Conquistador is confirmed, but Spanish inquisitor seems to fit the new sistems too.

So are you saying that you are expecting the Spanish Inquisition?

I'm guessing any inquisitor unit would become available through policy choice.

Yeah.... was looking forward to this being a casus belli system of religious war... not the addition of magical combat to civ

I'm hoping they added the animation specifically to rile up the folks who whine constantly about 'historical accuracy'. That'd be hilarious! :D

I presume the 'magic rays' are just a symbol to represent theological debate, conversion etc, in the same way that the explosions represent military combat. I don't see why anyone should be shocked by it. It's just the normal, lighthearted, somewhat cartoony Civ approach to history. Look at the way leaders are portrayed!

I think that might be in the game too. Clearly there is some difference between a "surprise war" and other kinds of wars. It's just a question at this point what those other kinds of wars might be. I'd be very surprised if a war of religion is left out of that system.

They could have an animation of two holy guys arguing. Magic rays sounds better to look at but either works.

Maybe a Life Of Brian stoning scene instead.

Suddenly the Theocracy government sounds a lot more interesting.

Slightly off topic. But they should have something like this for corporations too!

Also can apostales be on the same tile as military units?

Maybe we'll see an economic victory in one of the expansions :)

It would be cool if you paired a knight and an apostle if the knight somehow transformed into a crusader unit

Maybe units purchased with faith could get a crusader promotion which give them a bouns against cities who follow a different religion.

Per the Monastic Isolation Belief, losing in Theological Combat weakens your religious pressure. Presumably the opposite is also true.

I kind of hope Spain has a second UU, Dominican Friars, which excel in Theological Combat.

Eagle, if this is true, I am not sure I would play any other Civ. I am already very excited about the Religious Victory, and I have a great affinity for the Dominicans.

Also, I am thinking Relics and Religious Great Works are there to work the Religious system into other systems. I would love to play a Culture/Religion game.

I'm excited if it's true! Civ5 religious war was nonexistent.
Most of my conflicts start because a country can't keep their zealots out of my territory. If you send a missionary into my territory I will use any first strike option available regardless of our relationship. I would enjoy having some way of fending off missionaries aside from nuking the entire enemy country.

That seems like a good idea for a civic. "Religious Persecution: foreign religious units are blocked from entering your territory." Or if that's too much, due to the religious victory, get weaker each turn they are in your territory.
