Pangaea.

Fractal or Pangaea until now for me, sometimes something different.

Sometimes I edit the map scripts a little. Like with Pangaea plus I picked up from the recent Steam sale; I thought the amount of islands was a little over the top and slashed it to a third of what's in the original script. I now get something that holds the middle between Pangaea and Pangaea plus, and I like it better that way.

Often map scripts are quite rigid in their concept, but can be edited to allow for more flexibility or randomness, and I like to do that.

I like ring, and I've had a lot of fun with it...

best of the standard ones is fractal...

Pangea - I get to meet all civs early in the game, trade with them, etc. Water slows things down too much. Also it allows AI to wage wars better, especially against other AI civs, since it doesn't have to deal with naval invasions.

I've had the most fun on highlands but I voted Continents as I play them most. I enjoy a race to get caravels across the ocean for new trading partners.
Didn't realize there was a continents plus. I have that DLC so I'll be there next after I finish this archipelago/Polynesia game.

I have all the DLC except the map packs...but I don't remember seeing Continents Plus as an option (just Small Continents, which I find annoying).

How do I get Continents Plus as an option in games?

The Explorer map pack has 5 map scripts, Pangaea plus, Continents plus, Amazon, Sandstorm and Donut, so yeah, it's part of a map pack you have to pay for.
I picked it up for a pound at the recent sale.

Used to be terra and small continents until I realized just how easy it was to win on a cramped continent (esp. when the ai doesn't settle the 'new world' very well) and how a single wooden ship could cripple any invading force.

Now, I like pangea or Earth. The larger setting makes it harder to dominate.

No four corners love? I probably play continents the most, but four corners is just fun for me. I like the "chinese checkers" feel of the map. You try to take too much and another civ is ready to spear you in the side! I also enjoy the placement of natural wonders and CSs on four corners.

I haven't played Civ V in ages (it's more fun to make maps for it than play it), but I don't understand how people can play on anything other than accurate World Maps or Europe Maps. The World Map that shipped with the game is atrocious, and most of the fan-made ones have some glaring flaw (no food in Australia to found Sydney; deformed Great Britain; tundra in Southern Finland; etc) that prevents me from playing on them. I have been making my own World Map for more than a year now... Hopefully it will be ready before the Summer holidays, to release my fickle kin from their chronic agonies!

Because when I feel like playing a historical game with a realistic map, I play games that are actually designed for that - mainly Europa Universalis, for me.

The scouting and exploring part of Civilization is perhaps the most entertaining part of the entire game, for me, so I really have a hard time playing in non-random map (even though a few of them make for really nice gameplay).

But well, that's part of the beauty of Civ, isn't it? It offers a great variety of playstyles.

Fractal - It's awesome how unpredictable it is: 1 land mass? 2? 3? Is this a peninsular or a bridge to a bigger/smaller continent? Circle seas (like Black Sea), authentic seeming mountain ranges, resource free expanses of land. Is brilliant.

Since the AI doesnt know how to fight across ocean, or even how to use ships for naval warfare, i would say pangea is the best map. But fractal is good as well.

Yeah i've tried pretty much all the main map types now, and Fractal really is the best for how awesomely random it is.

Agreed (and I have Europa but haven't played yet - picked that up in the recent sale).

I usually play Random, though that mostly sticks me in continent maps (I don't think I'd noticed fractal as an option this time round), but I'm trying individual map types one by one at the moment to farm the achievements (since you don't get, say, the continents achievement for winning on a randomly-generated continents map).
