I personally like to conquer the world and don't allow the space race. I also prefer small maps because I don't like to handle too many cities. I usually found around 5 cities and then go to conquer my neighbours. This is better to MP games also because the other players don't have many cities either so each turn doesn't last for ever.

I also hate the barbarians. They are weak so they make no sense under a strategic point of view (only at the begining they are dangerous).

That's not always true!! It really depends on the difficulty level!!
For Example...at Deity is far more difficult to protect your cities against "naval" barbarians, as they appear right next to the city and with a bunch of units!! This is particullary dangerous in any part of the game where u are founding cities and leaving them unguarded!! (They are easy to be taken by "naval" barbarians)
Even when u have a unit defending the city, sometimes the barbarians r so many that eventually your unit may fall in combat!!

Besides if was not the barbarians where would we get the 150 gold for randsom?? (pretty cool i think)

Don't forget too, that the barbarians represent not only the barbarians of acient times, but the "barbarians" (terrorists) of the present day!!

I prefer an all out, Deity, Large Random Map, 7 Players, Raging Hordes, and some extra help for the AI. Unless you play Raging Hordes, Civ II becomes very difficult. For instance, in GOTM 9, raging hordes are suppling a steady stream of Barbs and Barb Leaders (for units and gold, respectively). 150g is much better than 50g!

Except in GOTMs, I don't play for score... but i also don't pre-limit my options with Bloodlust. Very rarely does an AI even start a SS, much less launch, though.

Well JayKay, I ususally found only 4 or 5 cities at the begining. At this stage the barbarians are dangerous, but after that they are only a stream of money like starlifter says. I usually don't found cities later on the game, I just conquer them.

In Deity I always have at less three units in every citie because they provide happiness (till democracy or republic) and defense. So there is no chance the barbarians can take me a citie. When they appear I have to go out of the city and smash them (which is very easy as they are so weak). So they only make me lose my time and make earn money. That's why I don't like them.

Well...as for the question (i almost forgot about it), i also prefer civ 2 MP games with small maps so that the game is quicker (and the bill is lower)!!

I prefer as well x2 movement and x2 production!!

If i play alone i prefer Large Maps (Wet; Temperate; 4 bilion; Continents), King (for now - i've won a couple of times in deity though), Ranging Hordes, 7 Civs!!

:)

I always go for the space race, conquering is not my style, though I have won my only Emperor level game this way, (Im a weakling at Prince/King level now).
I usually need 8-10 cities before 1000-500 BC to pump out enough resaerch to go Republican or Democratic.

i used to conquer, but then i took into interest of this "science" thing, and began using a SSC in my strategy. This was mostly due to players like starlifter and other science crazed players. :goodjob:

I like a game that allows everything to be played. I like to be able to use all my units and techs to the fullest. I like diplomacy and military actions. i usualy do not attack a civ till later in game i hate early attacking due to the fact it can set you back in game. I like lots of production and large cities. And trade plays a big part in my game. Money, science, production, diplomacy, and the once and awhile nuke :) I like everything and dont have a favorite way to play-the biggest thing i hate is i play mp a lot and people wont finish a damn game. And if they fall behind they just get up and go. Most important thing is you dont need 100 cities before the 1 ad mark-you need strong, economical, and producing cities. With the right attitude during diplomacy anything can be solvd if your a small civ.
SINISTER

Not very large map, raging hordes, emperor. I prefer real world maps, but many of the good ones I have a huge and bog the game down. Deity requires just enough micromanagement that I don't enjoy it so much.

I like the space race, but end up conquering the world anyway. The AI sneak attacks, I sack a city or two. Two turns later, they sneak attack, I sack a city or two, ad nauseum. I end up the last civ before I even get to space flight.

I haven't actually completed a game in over a year due to end game boredom.

Scenarios are the best way to play civ. A good scenario always is a fresh change to the normal game.

hmmm sodak, you sound like you're bored of civ2, perhaps you should try a higher difficulty level for a challenge, or make a scenario where you have a disadvantage :goodjob:

I prefer a peaceful game with spaceships. I play at Deity, with a large map, some restless barbarian tribes, and 5-7 civs, since I'm basically isolationist. I'm a science freak, so that's how I go out.

same here, i never engage in any wars if necessary, i don't have enough resources to go into units, i usually need them to build wonders, and improvements. I play on king now, large, 5civs, raging, SS.

(I hate it when one civ wants me to ally with them to fight another civ, and the next turn around they sign a peace treaty with that civ! ARgggh, that makes me so mad.)

Good assessment! I often use a made map and give myself a very poor starting position. I've played deity, but the detailed tinkering is just a bit too much for me to have fun. I'm currently on civ sabbatical for a few weeks. It won't be too long before I play more again... It's fun to patrol the forums in the meantime.

To some degree I'm with dreadhead7 and Jc011(I've only conquered everybody twice in Civ2) , though sometimes it kicks ass to engage in limited modern warfare.

I like to play games that I win...Seriously though most my games are on large and end in all out war...So conquest is the only victory condition for me. :)

Mine end in war, too. I don't ever build a SS in private SP games. GOTMs yes, public games maybe. The end game war is the really fun part to me!! Especially wiping out entire civs in one or two turns. I've never had a "real" space race, except in my 2nd game. And then the race ended when I used spies to nuke the Russians in about 1997. The game was over in about 5 turns, ...

Hehe the only time I have had a proper space race was ToT and that was because there was an alien race on Alpha Centauri so I had to launch space ship so I could reach them. I would have actually been nice to them but I could not talk to them (needed research) so I had to launch a bloody war transporting units from Earth and gradually wearing down his smaller empire. I had the whole of Earth but he only had about 30 cities on AC.

Diety, Raging hordes, Largest map, 7 civ.

Right now I just look at games, and play to 1 AD (no reload), but I used to try to build as many cities as possible (and reload), and try to build a lot of wonders and try to have peace with the rest of the AI's. But now I am split between the tactic of having a SSC (like Starlifter, Smash etc) or creating a lot of caravans/settlers in the beginning (to help science) and get trade routes (like Shadowdale, etc). I need more games to get my own style using these incredibly efficient tactics.

One caravan could be worth one advance (+money) in the beginning, which makes up for the SSC if you do it right (I guess).

There are so many paths....!!

Deity, Large map, Wet, Warm, Villages Only, 7 Civs.
I like to discover the world. I'm expansionist. But I seldom play after 1500A - it is not interesting. At this moment I usually dominate on the world and several left enemies are vegetated. I try to catch the world with minimum battles. I found 100-200 cities (depend on map) and develop my "culture".
