what kind of player are you?

Question.

I've heard trading is important, but there is one thing that has always haunted me. I was thinking that, if I trade with the AI player, yes, I will progress, but I the AI will also progress too? And if the AI has an advantage over me, and I have something very valuable, would trading be a smart thing to do?

I'm thinking: "Sure, I will get a lot of benefits, but the AI will get what it needs, and by that, I will end up being even more backwards, compared to the AI."

Tips or explanation?

Trade has two forms of gain -- the first is the initial boon of beakers and coins, and the second is a stream of ongoing arrows. Only the camel provider gets the first -- which can often be as much as half of an advance+ (yes, go for the trade!)

As for ongoing arrows, a city is limited to three routes, but that same city can be hooked up to a number of other sites -- my SSC is often the partner to half my empire. If a foreign location demands a nice product (say silk) & I'm lucky enough to have multiple sources, then my 6-20 cities may end up with ongoing arrows due to this target market -- but it only nets 3 of mine.
(So again, yes, go for the trade.)

Big cities+great army=world domination
...so, I try to build all 50 cities for a short period of time (1000 A.D.). Let them grow huge. Pump them up till 1800 A.D., and then I build me a great fckn army (city produces armor in two turns, missile in one turn).
I belive that many of us like to conquer, don't we? Little ol' nukes never hurt nobody, right? Right. We're only humans.
"...And I wanna conquer the world, give all the idiots a brand new religion..." (Bad Religion)

If you dont like the game to get too long take a small map, raging hordes and the tribe you prefer. expand fast while researching for monarchy. once you have that go straight for magnetism and crush your enemies with frigates. buy the noncostal cities
and you will rule the entire world. my fastest victory was in 540AD.

after playing all kinds of combinatons of level, barbarians, map size, etc. my "new goal" was finding extremes and many things to reach in the least amount of years.
some limits are:
not more than 30.000 goldpieces
not more than 400 armys
not more than 320.000.000 inhabitants
after 255 futuretechnologies it starts again with 0
only 255 cities can be built

some of my extremes are:
highest science in one town 708
highest luxury in one town 402
highest tax in one town 469
highest amount of shields in one town 187
highest outcome of a tradeline 610 (oil)
biggest city 126
46 advances in one round (this one seems to be a bug)
i think i had 3 or 4 "legal" advances

on a self created map i managed to get
first future technologie in 2880 b.c.
all wonders finished 2900 b.c.
the great in 2980 b.c.
and the throne finished in 3180 b.c.
(i think its possible to get everything before 3000 b.c.)
you cannot launch spaceship before christ :)

anybody else here who is crazy like i am? :D

The 46 advances in one turn is not a bug. somewhere around future tech 165 (+/-10) the beaker counter rolls over to the starting number which is 10 beakers per advance. There are a couple of threads here covering this, but, its really straight-forward...it costs up to approx 32,000 beakers and suddenly the next one costs only 10 beakers. You can see what happens then.

If by "armys" you mean units, actually the limit is much higher. Somewhere around 2k. However, the limit applies to combined units of all civs (like the 255 city limit)

This can be MUCH higher.
2176 - normal course of regular game (Rivertowne) I think Elephant and others may have topped this.

With highly specialized custom map:
3672 - some restarts, but not cheat-mode play
3780 - custom map with a bit of cheat mode to add citizens to trading city.
down the page, post 18 and beyond.

Well placed cities
One/two defending units
Monarchy
Setlers all over the place
Caravans (lots)
City walls
troops on montains with fortresses to protect "the perimeter"
Leonardo's workshop
Comunism (I can't mantain democracy  )
Spys

Dificulty- Prince

I prefer playing on very very small cenarios, with 7oponents. I believe it's a much more challenging game :goodjob:

Cheers

Small maps are easier for you then larger maps.
The AI has no clue what to do early game and you can just rush him with Horsemen/Legions.

On lager maps the AI at least manages to get some tech parity with you and it's a challenge to break trough he's well defended cities.
If you'r a builder just go Republic and expand really hard and get a major tech lead. Then you can just overrrun the outdated AI with modern units. And if you want you can swap to Communism or even Fanaticism to avoid WW.

i was bored one night at 11:32 so i decided to comb the forums for some tips. I was just wondering how many settlers, diplomats/spys and caravans do you build, and what level of difficulty u are on. When i usually play i build about 3-7 settlers so i can max a city very fast and get all those wonder bonuses to start a flowing hoover dam/pyramids/etc. :jesus: :hammer: so now u understand how tired i am... i think... but just list your info and what you build, so post post post... god im so tired im gonna sleep for about 3-4 hours and then wake up and then take a 4-6 hour nap... good nite all

I use a different strategy everytime. I tend to only play scenarios on civ2 and on civ1 since there aren't any scenarios, I'm always the Romans anyway... So I kinda go with civilizations mentality and incorporate that into a strategy. Like the Romans were conquerors, traders, backstabbers, and such. So I decided that with the Romans I'll stick with Monarchy and I'll kill off every civilization on the map... I'd make a peace treaty for personal gain and once that was over I'd quite simply go for the throat everytime if the civ didn't have anything to offer me. Sometimes I'd surround the last city and just send caravans in there to make $$$ get some settlers out there so they end up being a colony...in a way

This is for my first city. I only play Chieftain.

2 Denfensive Units in a city
Then I build 1 Settler.
City Walls then Barracks in any order.
Horsemen to explore
Pyramids

Playing on Warlord. I'm generally going for exploration and fast growth early. Start with a warrior to explore and them start pumping out settlers to grab terrritory and in turn start growing with more settlers. I like to get to 10-12 cities with minimal overlap as soon as I can, and then slow down and start cranking out city improvements I like to get Monarchy as soon as I can, and if I'm under threat from neighbours I'll tend to stay there, otherwise will go to Republic and tend to stay there if I can.

Must have wonders are Great Library and Leonardo's Workshop, Copernicus, SETI etc - I want to stay ahead of the pack scientifically. So I always want to be first to philosophy and Darwin's Voyage also.

In temperament I tend to be isolationist and pacifist, until I'm attacked. Thereupon I won't rest until the attacker is totally destroyed. I try not to open wars on more than one front, but sometimes you don't have a choice. As soon as I have triremes, I'll be off mapping coastlines all over the world. And I've found that if the AI is being a b*tch, then big navies are often very useful.

After that it tends to vary - it just depends on what the AI is throwing at me. The variation is why I love this game so much.

I have Civ3 but don't play it - I much prefer Civ2. I'll probably look at Civ4 when the price comes down, but it'll have to be bl**dy good to get me away from Civ2.

I like to play games/scenarios where AI civs start with enormous advantage.

I set Deity, 7 civs, then order both settlers to sleep and skip turns till 1AD or even 1000AD. Then found the first city and play the game untill the whole map is conquered. This may happen well after 2100AD.

I also enjoy playing Spanish, Turks, Neutrals and French in original WWII scenario.

Starting on north pole is another good variant.

However, when such games reach a point of inevitable victory (half of the map conquered, I have a large army of howitzers and new ones are produced in all cities), I usually quit.

I am an expansionistic player. Build those settlers and grab as much land as you can. Expand, expand expand! You might be a little bit slower at the beginning, but when you get later in the game you really steam roll over people and then I get aggressive.

On Diety/Emperorer Level
I Build a Ph then a Settler, The settler builds a city then repeats that settler build road to connect and some irrigation
Go for Monarchy
I Try to build Pyramids Asap then go Democracy build SoL
switch to Fun
Destroy AI Civs, switch back to Dem and WLTK till GotM Score no longer increases.

On King Level
I dont build as many Cities , build Collosus & Hanging Garden
Research Monarchy then Monothesiam (Mich Chap) then Republic (at least thats the plan)
WLTK to size 8
Research Construction Astronomy (Cop) Medicine(Shakes) Sanation then Democracy (Sol)
WLTK to max size for food
Switch to Communisum
Attack AI's
Swicth back to Dem when being peaceful

That's pretty much me to. Build a new city every two tiles and get going. By the end of the game I can have well over a hundred cities. Then I just plow over everyone. Admittedly, the beginning gets a little dull, but it's worth it in the end.
