Deity

AND never turning back! (unless it's a competition game or something else :))

I've just recently moved up to Monarch from Regent, which I've been playing at for most of the time now. I always go Random Civs and Random map. Random opponents and everything else as well. But since PTW, I've been starting in the future era and not going standard civ3 progression

My current game is on warlord, but after that I'll probably move up to regent if I win, or stay on warlord for another game if I lose. For the most part I only get to play on weekends, so it doesn't look like I'll be moving up too quickly... :(

Edit: I moved up to Regent a while ago (as I reported in a post several pages ahead). In my first Regent game, I'm doing pretty well; score of about 2300, date is about 1800, and I'm almost certainly going to win. Next single-player game I play will probably be Emperor. I'll probably get creamed the first game, but it'll be a learning experience....

Emporer is starting to get a bit easy, but Deity is tough. I think once you start to make the AI slaves to diplomacy Emporer is easy. I just have to pay more attention in Deity to keep up w/o falling too far behind. I'm also trying Always War on monarch which seems to be a Deity challenge. The last time I tried I was the Celts and was kicking arse w/o iron. Then I got to the middle ages w/o iron (and i couldn't trade for it of course), i lost interest.

Chieftain.

I'm a six months into this game. I won a diplomatic victory and a histograph - but even that histograph wasn't good. I used a program to boost my gold. Even with lowering my scicence and luxs and stuff I couldn't stop a gold hemmorage that was emptying my treasury.

I feel that until I can master the basics and feel pretty good, I shouldn't move up just yet.

From all these posts, it seems as though a lot of people are playing really high levels. I can tell by all their strategies and such (i.e. trading techs, setting science to 0%, scout usage) things that I wouldn't do - yet.

Monarch. I feel very comfortable and confident playing monarch, but I have a feeling that my approach is too tailored for a particular set of conditions - map configuration I'm used to, civ traits I'm used to, UUs I'm used to, etc. I picked up the November GOTM, which was Monarch but otherwise lots of game conditions I'm not accustomed to, and I got, well, spanked.

So rather than moving up a level to increase my challenge, I'm going to try randomizing more things, including what civ I am playing and what the map's like and such.

As an aside, I'll comment that it's neat how the result this poll is looking like such a clean normal distribution, peaked between Regent and Monarch.

Doesn't matter which level i start with. As long as there is no aggression towards me until later in the game, i can always be on top of everyone else.

But on higher difficulty levels the AI is more agressive, especially in the early game.

I play Monarch about 75% of the time, Emperor about 20% and Deity about 5%. Like others have said, Deity is too much of an advantage to the AI. It seems like most games are just hopeless from the start and that's not fun. I think in order to win on Deity you must fight the whole time and get lucky early.

Emperor is fun but many times I find that within the first 20 turns all the Civs know each other and before you know it they have traded so many advances that they're ready for the second era. Then they stall around feudalism and I catch up.

Monarch is the most fun, but I don't think I could ever lose. Toward the middle of the second era I usually am so dominant its no fun.

Started At Chieftain, won several games as a Warlord, and been playing Regent winning most of 'em. How do you know when you're ready for the next level ?

Some Monarch, but mostly Emperor.

I play Deity because I like a hard military challenge in the modern times. I have only won 3-4 times but its fun :D!

I played regent for a very long time, I am honestly trying to break into Monarch level now. Trying to win Monarch without reloading, a very difficult task.

I'd love to go back to Warlord and get all of the wonders and mop up, though...

I play mostly on Monarch, sometimes on Regent. Actually it's more of a custom setting in between the two. I find a few tweaks on the Monarch level to be more desirable than the bogus AI enhancements found in Deity.

Deity is the only level where i don't win constantly. The high chance that i will not win keeps me playing to defy that chance.

Emperor. And never lost a game yet! :) :) Okay. I just won my first emperor game. I will do some more before moving to deity though.
