Just curious- what Machines are y'all civving on? Am I the only sorry schmuck to be waiting eons between turns on my 333mhz IMac? Yeah, I maxxed out my RAM (256-wow) but I still feel as though I'm in slow-mo sometimes!
Also- who's had luck using PC-generated MODS (rather than maps/scenarious, whatever) on Mac? Which patch should I use? I've tried all three, including the open beta?

I'm using a G4 533 mhz with 384 ram, two HD one 40gig the other 60gig, geforce2 32meg and 19 inch monitor with a max resolution of 1600x1200...

...and I find this so slow...

I'm using a dual 1000 and a 17 inch monitor, and it takes a long time for the AI to do turns late in the game... but this is a much faster system than the dual 800 and the cinema display i have at my office.

Not sure which part of the architecture contributes the most to this speed difference. I know the cinema display can really seem to choke some games, Diablo 2 was a classic example of that... but Civ3 has prefs for the cinema display resolution.

Nonetheless, Civ3 has been a fantastically wonderful but unbelievably huge consumer of my free/sleep time.

I'm on a three year-old imac w/ a 333mhz processor and 288 RAM (OS 8.6). I have some waiting, but its nothing like I hear people complain about. In late game, on large maps, I wait approx. 1 min. 15 sec. (I timed it once). Very bearable, particularly because its a strategy game and plans need to be thought out between turns.

Sure, I'd still like it to be faster.

If you're on a G3 classic mac, you've not maxed out your RAM. It'll go up to 544 mgs of RAM.;)

Gossamer G3 (Beige G3/233)
384 MB RAM
OSX 10.1.4

The only times I've experienced a slow game are when I'm playing on a huge world with more than 10 civilizations in it. Otherwise, the game cooks at a fairly fast clip.

Turns are faster when playing at Chieftan level, and slow down once I hit Regent.

I was wandering if os x really work well with a beige g3 233, since this was my last computer...

Hi,
Worked well on my G3/233Mhz before I upgraded to my G3/700Mhz. Also works well on my friend's G3/333Mhz - all comps had 256+ RAM.

I'm using a powerbook G4 667mhz (DVI) running OS X (10.1.5) and the game flies along, honestly. I had a G3 500mhz iBook before the powerbook and running the game on it was painfully sluggish.

i'm using a G4 Cube (450 MHz/20 GB HD/448 MB RAM) with Mac OS X (10.1.5) and i'm satisfied with the speed, sure it could be faster, but i thinks it's ok an playable. on my iBook 2000 (G3 500 MHz/10 GB HD/384 MB RAM) also with Mac OS X 10.1.5 it runs a little bit slower but still playable without getting crazy. even on my G3 b/w (333 MHz/60 GB HD/256 MB RAM) with Mac OS 9.2.2 it runs acceptable... btw i'm playing CIV III with the beta-patch (but i don't have noticed any speed-difference to the other patches). no problems using pc-made mods/graphics etc...

Believe it or not, OSX also works quite well on a clamshell iBook with less than the recommended amount of RAM in it!!!!

When I'm leaving on trips, I just plug my iBook into the network (quickly, before the other half gets to her Win 98 machine and finds she can't get online) and transfer saves to it, that way I can play on the flight.

But yes, Trabpukcip, OSX works very well on a Beige G3, as long as you don't mind doing without your floppy drive and serially connected printers and peripherals. If you haven't already done this, go out and get a USB and a Firewire card.... or as in my case, a Firewire/USB combo card.

I'm running it on a dual 800 with a 19" monitor at 1152 X 870 and I find it a bit slow between turns late in the game. Of course I always play the largest available map, currently at Monarch level, so I'm not helping it out much. Right now Civ III is taking up most of my game cycles, but with MoO III coming fairly soon and HoMM IV just announced for Xmas, I imagine I'll be splitting my time between my three favorite series again soon. Wonder how I'm going to find time for Europa Universalis which is also due by the end of the year? I'm gonna be in gaming heaven! :D :D :D
