i don't usually need a reason except to conquer the world. the immediate reasons run like this:
ancient era - techs, money and more territory and to trigger a golden age
middle age - great leaders for wonders. can't really build wonders the old fashioned way at monarch level and above...besides, knights and cavalry have to be put to some use.
industrial - pure territory grabbing and weakening of any civ poised to build either UN or spaceship
mordern - wipe all remaining civilizations off.

I'm glad to see there no color-blind people playing with a japanese version, though :)

And personnaly, I'm going for war because I try to run a tidy and neat empire, here, people, working all the holy day with my bromm and whip, and I just hate it when the AI COMES IN WITHOUT WIPING ITS FEET AND LEAVES MUD ALL OVER THE PLACE !

Congratulations!!!

At the start of the game, my reason is as follows:
Listen here, Romans, I have a much bigger military than yours, and unless you give me all your cash and all your techs, i will destroy you? Hows that for renegotiating peace??? NO???? VERY WELL THEN, PREPARE FOR YOUR ULTIMATE DESTRUCTION!!!1

how does that sound. After that, I have a nice big military and get whatever I want out of everybody :) After that I only declare war when people betray me. I don't there's a poll option for this. :)

yeah, you're right... No such options...
But of course the AI will NEVER betray you. Just remember to read those size 2 comments at the bottom of each agreement ;)

In old age or in begining of medieval age, if i dont have at least 3 luxuries, then i go war with swordman or knight.
I dont go into war for salpeter if i dont have it.
I will go into war for coal if i dont get it and same for oil.
Once i know rocketry ( alumunium) then i go into war to raise every AI city. Conquest victory.

Well, usually, if I really need a resource or luxury ... esp. coal, oil or aluminum. OR am way short on luxury. I will start looking around for the most logical target.

Sometimes, if the AI is very nasty about trespass, or its workers start "re-working" my mines or irrigation.

But most of all, it he/she actually has the nerve to ... attack ME!. At all. Even a little. Once that occurs, they've signed their death warrant. I war until they are exterminated. NO mercy. IF it goes badly and I have to make peace to survive, its just a time to rebuild until I can resume my work. That civ is going down and the only reason it won't is if another civ, or it, kills me off. If I am totally outmatched (something I do absolutely everything I can to prevent from occuring), then I seek allies, and subterfuge, and anything I can come up with to help KILL THEM. *ALL* of them. [plasma]

It's a Minbari thing.

1. Strategic Resources
2. Luxury Resources
3. Lebensraum and gain strategic staging areas
4. To build a large industrial/military economic base

Finally, I've found someone who plays the game just like me!

Sheer bloody-mindedness

I am the human, AI civilisations WILL bow before me.

Plus, they're always making snide remarks after I shark them in trade deals.

I go to war with the English just on principle though.
Elizabeth, Ruler of way too many places to mention...
Bah, I've seen your civ Lizzie, you've got ONE city...and I know where it is.

Grovel dammit

:queen: :rocket:

I have seen this category yet:
That small Civ owns 5 of my future cities ;)

I have started more then one war just to grab a few cities and wipe out a weak civ. Especially if some of the cities are near the Capitial / FP and can be productive.

OK, it is time to cleanup the remants of that annoying civ.

My loaded transports just "happened to arrive" by your small island :satan:

Resources are always a prime concern, luxuries eventually if I don't have many and can't trade reasonably for them.

Mostly land and cities, though. Sometimes I've been at peace so long and I can't expand, I'll start a war with my neighbor, take a few cities and repeat.

Have been known to start a war just because I'm ahead in tech or have a resource and can make a unit they can't yet. If I get cavalry or tanks first it's a short road to war even if I don't need to. I can't help rolling over them when I get the chance.

The reason I declare war is:

2% I'm Bored
3% They did something that made me mad
95% I need workers

Hey, I'm not about to use MY people to till the field, clean up the trash and mine them hills, that's what captives are for. Besides the AI puts their cities in stupid spots... besides captive amazon workers build such nice roads....

In my current game I was the Japanese and the Iriquois put a city right on my border, the city expanded and stole my incense. So I went to war to wipe out that city and a couple of others. But now I have learned that my only source of iron as been used, so I may have to go to war again.(Although the only other sources of iron on my continent are in the heart of the Iriquois and Persian empires)

Stop coming into my territory. I said stop coming. STOP ! I SAID... oh well.

No matter how many freaking times you tell the ******* AI to stay out - they just keep on coming. Over and over and over and over and.....
ARGH!
So my empire is in the way of your expansion to the east. Can't you just build a galley - cheat and go all the way around the world and find that spot you were going through my territory for.

Next time, I'll position some of those invincible spearmen along my borders. Try to get past THEM sucker!!

A war fought for iron - seems to be a good reason (if you're a warmonger)
But hey - how are you gonna fight the war - when you don't have iron to use for units?
Hope you're trading some other civ for iron ;)

The stupid AI has every civilization against me now, except Hammurabi (that Saddam Hussein of Babylon) comes and wants a MPP. "Together we'll be invincible," he says. He's right.

The current alliances are:

Rome/England -- both annoyed
Germany/Iroquois -- both annoyed
Babylon/France -- yay! :) -- and the two strongest militaries
Zulu -- annoyed
Persia -- annoyed
