what map do you suggest for 31 civs?

Frankly I can't think of any. If you must you will need a extra huge map at least 200x200.

I would use the min water as the more coastal cities you have the longer the turns will take.

In that case, more important than the amount of water is the land form - pangaea maps have about 2-3 times less coast than archipelago maps. ;)

Not good if you're claustrophobic though... :D

I play on 224x224 maps with 31 civs, continents, 60% water and it seems to be just the right size to avoid the "too many cities" warning. Turns take a long time later in the game, however.

Tiny Pangea with 31 Civs is very fun ;)
This is like, in halo2, a beaver creek rocket launcher game!

I always like various world maps with 31 civs. About 120x120 to 140x140 is perfect. Just enough room to usually get in about 10 cities and then you gotta conquer the rest.

120x120 to 140x140 with the maximum (40%) land I presume? Or are these custom-made maps?

Though the problem is that doesn't work! :( You've actually got to watch what's going on so that you don't miss some critical AI troop movement. If only civ3 had been made so that all the unit movements occur first, and THEN all the calculations for AI trade, diplomacy, etc occur.

What type of map/how much water do you think is good to play on with 31 other civs?
A big one.

How do you play with more than the civs the size of map allows? When I play a standard map, I only get to play against 7(?) rivals. And a different amount (but not 32) if I increase the size of the map.

31 civs on a tiny map? Was everyone playing a OCC? :D

You need to edit the game - get into the Civ3 Editor, click 'Edit Rules', click on the 'World Settings' tab, and set the number of civilizations on a tiny map (or any other sized map, for that matter) to 31. Then save it and select 'Load Scenario' when you get into the game. ;)
