What music goes well with Orbis?

Since I can't stand the base selection of music for more than one epic game I do what everyone else does. I listen to a custom set of tunes. Just curious about what you guys like to listen to while churning turns.

I found that Two steps from hell does well to catch the Orbis feel. Then again I'm sucker for choir music while gaming away the hours.

I am curious of that as well. I am going to select a new music for 0.30 (redistribute some existing tracks, but also add new ones), so any advice will be appreciated.

Do you play OO a lot? Choir music seems to fit ;)

I will disclose some of my preferences on what to hear when coding new things. Been listening to the music from "A Shaggoth on the roof" when worked on OO changes.
Sample: http://www.cthulhulives.org/shoggoth/Byakhee.mp3
And now, making Dao & Palatinate I am listening mostly to Polish folkmetal group called "Żywiołak" ("Elemental" in Polish)
Sample (not the best, but still nice): http://w198.wrzuta.pl/audio/1ZMMSsO24ZO/czarodzielnica (especially the second half of the track)

Edit:
actually, these two are my favourite while coding: http://w112.wrzuta.pl/audio/0WdRIDMNm2A/zywiolak_-_05._wily (if you red Harry Potter series, you know about Veela. Well, the real (?) ones were different. And west slavic versions were much much different, but you will see it... in some time. Just remeber not to dance with them at noon)
And second one, http://oxygene1994.wrzuta.pl/audio/03TA0yUokpR/09_psychoteka
There is more if you like to check the tags...

I think that the band Delerium has some great music in a lot of their earlier work. Very dark and ominous. Still think that the Desert Rose for the OO is wrong.

To tell the truth I think that putting much effort into new music is sort of a waste. Most people I've talked to use a custom music folder, since that's even supported in-game by CIV4.

Never played OO much. I'm glad you're changing them in v1.00 because now they're sort of weak. Current pick of music is a bit off, in my book. Heh, never though of those guys to be much into choirs. Always figured OO cities to be uncomfortable quiet places, possibly with eerie distant tunes that no ordinary musician could perform. So all is but low whispers and hums. Strain your ears to hear and then... Crescendo! But I'll let one of the masters put it into better words:

"And travellers, now, within that valley,
Through the red-litten windows see
Vast forms, that move fantastically
To a discordant melody,
While, like a ghastly rapid river,
Through the pale door
A hideous throng rush out forever
And laugh- but smile no more."

i tend to shut civs music down and listen my own music :P mostly coldplay ;) just because i like it, not because it fits with the game, so i have to agree don't put too much effort in music.

When I'm coding I usually listen to a bit of Muse, it really helps me focus, if not, its usually some pop like Ke$ha or Lady Gaga, whatevers on the radio really :P

I can relate to that. Since Civ 4 takes such a long time to play it's pretty usual for me to turn off the music and listen to the radio instead. A chance to learn something new while relaxing with a hobby.

I usually listen to the game music. I think it's awesome and helps the mood.

Ahwaric, if you're thinking of adding more music, I have a few recommendations. Triarii's Pièce Héroique is awesome martial music, that has a fitting "putting the fear of god in you" atmosphere. I recommend some of the instrumental tracks, such as Victoria or Le Crépuscule Des Dieux.

I also recommend Peter Mergener's Nox Mystica. It's fully instrumental album with a dark medieval sound.

I have found that running music from other sources slows my system down too much. However, later in the game to help speed the game up, I just shut the music off.

However, I must say that for music I would like to see more 'neutral' music for when you haven't gotten a religion yet.

I can agree with that choice. Nox Mystica feels appropriate and unlike many other kinds of music it's unobtrusive, which is a good thing for in-game tunes.

I also usually have the game music off. Aside from the issue of repetition, I find the constant interruptions of pop-ups, entering cities, and combat kind of annoying. Even if I don't like the music much, having it stop for 5 seconds and start up again is just unpleasant.

That being said, I would think something like Godspeed You Black Emperor, could find some use as background music (or maybe even city sound for certain tracks). Instrumental (aside from samples in some songs); sometimes creepy, energetic, dark, soft, loud, or all of the above; mostly long tracks. It can be hard to listen to by itself, but I think it'd be fine as background when playing. Check it out.

One thing that always bothered me about FFH2's music was the flavor inappropriateness of using something as soothing and new-agey as Enya to characterize Order. Every other aspect of Order points to it as an inquisitorial religion based in doctrine. Changing the 'religion spread' music for it to something more like the Christianity clip from vanilla Civ 4 would help reflect this. Some medieval/early Baroque choral music would work well for background as well.

Also, Myst is a great game to steal music from. Don't forget Riven, Exile, Uru, etc. They all have nice, ambient music that could work in Orbis.

Infected Mushroom FTW!

Unfortunatelly, their website is down. I will try to look for the soundtrack though - can always add it later.

Orbis 1.0 will contain 500 mb of soundtrack - 17 tracks per religion, all of them unique. It is 40 to 60 minutes of music per religion.
Also, Renaissance will get completly new soundtrack.

I hope you will like it - especially gaming veterans may hear some familliar tracks.
But as always, I expect feedback, and will probably adjust it later.
The new version will be out tomorrow.

17 tracks per religion :O nice

thanks for changing Renaissance, really didn't like it ;) cant wait till release :D
